About the Item

Rare antique Optimo All Havana polychrome enamel 14K rose gold cigar band ring Early 20th Century Transluscent ochre red and jet black enamel and rose gold classic oval cigar band ring with Optimo All Havana branding above and below the familiar vintage portrait of the founder, Tampa and A.SYCA for Antonio Santaella and Company on the sides on the band. Size: 8.5 US Tested for 14K gold Height: 22mm Width: 21 mm Condition: Very Good, beautiful patina Optimo cigars, known as " The Best of the Best", were enjoyed by the likes of Winston Churchill and Babe Ruth, the latter was known to stock up on his favorite brand at the the A. Santaella Cigar Factory in West Tampa. Optimo dates to 1886, founded by Antonio Santaella, a Spanish immigrant from Seville, whose brand became an iconic American success story. Antonio Santaella and his Bavarian partner Sol Hamburger began manufacturing cigars in 1886 and had factories in Key West, before expanding to Tampa, Florida. According to a 1920 passport application, Antonio Santaella was born in Spain 8 January 1863, and immigrated to the US, sailing from Havana, Cuba, October 1880. Interestingly, he also had ties to Brooklyn, New York, where he became a naturalized citizen in Kings County, Brooklyn, 9 February 1886. A savvy businessman who knew the power of advertising, he utilized large "privilege" signs to promote Optimo cigars which became part of urban landscape of New York in the early 20th century. Optimo cigar memorabilia is highly collectible for their strong graphics and is part of the collection of Museum of Florida History. Cigar band rings are having a moment. The Financial Times recently featured an article, Puff Daddies, on the subject, linking the design to Catherine the Great of Russia, English aristocrats and Gustav Bock, a Cuban cigar maker whose paper ring labels became the model for the cigar band ring. Examples in gold and enamel from the 19th and early 20th centuries are exceedingly rare and most know the style from the now iconic 1970's Cartier Corona Corona Habana model. A cigar band ring is witty, confident and wants to be noticed.
