My Life Expressed in an Early Poesy Ring
About the Item
A poesy ring is embellished with a saying engraved to its interior. Most often signifying a marriage ring, posie rings are typically English in origin with a long history from the medieval era to the 18th century. A few even entered into the 19th century. These engraved inscriptions took many forms, some unrelated to marriage and love.
This ring, in high carat gold, displays an interior inscribed with Lombardic lettering in Norman French â??Ceit Mon Vieâ??. Norman French (the precursor to modern day French) was used in the royal courts until the 15th century and employed for poesy rings during the 13th through the 14th century. The exterior of this ring is hand engraved with rose and leaf motifs as well as a cross pattée (formy). It is in exceptionally fine condition for its age and is an example as wearable today and timeless in its expression of love and life as it was 800 years in the past.
Date: 1200 to 1400.
Measurements: Just shy of 3/16 of an inch (0.4 cm) in length. Weight of 2.7 grams (1.8 dwt).
Ring Size: US 8-1/2 (UK Q-1/2; Int. Dia. 18.5; Euro 59 mm; Japan 17). This ring should not be sized up but may be sized down using inserts, butterfly or with some pattern loss. Contact us for more details.
