Edwardian Diamond Ring

About the Item

Dating from circa 1910, this platinum-topped gold ring is set with over 3.50 carats of old diamonds. The ring centers an old European-cut diamond, weighing approximately 1.50 carats, framed by an asymmetrical swirl of 10 old European-cut diamond accents and curving diamond shoulders, approximate total weight 1.90 carats, with a platinum-topped gold mount. Expressing the free form spirit of the Art Nouveau, this light and graceful period ring reads as scattering of sparkling diamonds that float on the finger. Product details: Item #: R-21075 Circa: 1910 Size: 5.75 (this ring can be sized; please contact the gallery for further information) Materials: 1 old European-cut diamond (with approximate total weight 1.5 carats with SI clarity ); 10 old European-cut diamonds (with approximate total weight 1.9 carats with SI clarity ); Platinum Topped 18K Gold Macklowe Gallery Curator's notes: The style of high Art Nouveau jewelry was defined in Paris by René Lalique, Maison Vever, Maison Fouquet and other pioneers, but its influence was felt throughout the jewelry world. Even diamond jewelry of this era set in platinum, which typically looked backward to the ordered world of Louis XV and XVI , occasionally expressed, as here, the powerful influence of the revolutionary international movement of Art Nouveau, with its sense of dynamic movement and freedom.

Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Throughout the 19th century, British astronomers made many advances, building on the enormous base of precise observations provided to them by their predecessors in the 1700s. Using the new technique of spectroscopy, they worked to determine the composition of heavenly bodies, while breakthroughs in understanding the geology of the earth -many made by passionate amateur scientists as diverse as surveyors and Anglican clergy - helped them discover the facts about the nature of the moon and newly discovered planets. It was in fact an Anglican priest who first advanced his well-supported theory that the earth was indeed more than a billion years old. Astonishing early imaging of the moon, as well as the appearance of the Great Comets of 1843 and 1882 that remained for months burning in the sky above England, helped stoke popular fascination with heavenly bodies.
