French Art Deco Diamond and Australian Sapphire Ring
About the Item
This French Art Deco ring has been hand crafted from platinum and set with diamonds and a beautiful Australian sapphire. Crafted circa 1920 the ring centres on an octagonal step cut 'good deep teal blue, bright, eye-clean, well cut' Australian sapphire weighing 1.60 carat. The halo of diamonds that surround the ring comprise 10 old mine cut diamonds of G colour and VS-SI clarity along with 4 single cut diamonds of G-H colour and VS clarity, with a total weight of 0.55 carat. To the inside of the shank is a 'PT 850' mark indicating the frame of the ring is crafted from 850 purity platinum. To the outside of the shank there is an unusual mask hallmark depicting the head of a bearded man, seen from the front, surrounded by a shaped border. This mark indicated items crafted from platinum that had been imported to France from contracting countries, in this case, likely Italy. The mark was used from 1913 through to 1926, assisting us in dating the ring to circa 1920. In such lovely condition for its age, there is no doubt that the piece would be a well suited engagement ring for an Art Deco admirer, or a beautiful cocktail ring which sparkles bright.
