About the Item

The cluster ring, or entourage ring, was the quintessential fine jewellery piece of the 1960s. Its design strives to maximise the impact of the single, precious coloured gemstone in its middle, juxtaposing it against a halo of fine diamonds. The settings and shank remain subtle, allowing the gemstones to take centre place. The vintage ring at hand dates to circa 1965 and perfectly embodies the above aesthetics. An intense blue 'no heat' sapphire is set into its middle, cut in the so-called sugarloaf cabochon style. This striking cut allows the gemstone to rise far above its surroundings, putting maximum emphasis on its play of colour. Depending on the source and direction of light, the sapphire gleams in cornflower and royal blue hues with some lighter reflexes as well, all the while maintaining a beautiful transparency. The 6.36 ct untreated sapphire rests embedded in a frame of twelve diamonds. These diamonds showcase the old European cut typical of the years around 1900, suggesting that they originate from an older piece, likely an heirloom whose gemstones have been reset into this newer mid-century jewel. Two further marquise cut diamonds rest on the ring shoulders. Contrasting against these diamonds, the sapphire showcases its particular intensity and vibrancy of colour. We were able to source this jewel in Zurich, Switzerland. Two independent gemological reports have been made on the rare untreated sapphire (origin: Sri Lanka) resp. the entirety of the gemstones. Both certificates will be delivered with the ring. MATERIALS A natural untreated no heat blue Ceylon sapphire, sugarloaf cabochon cut, 6.36 ct, 10.11 x 8.32 x 7.69 mm / 0.4 x 0.33 x 0.3 in 10 diamonds, old European cut, 1.45 ct altogether, Top Wesselton, G – Wesselton, H, vsi–si 2 diamonds, marquise cut, 0.32 ct altogether, Top Wesselton, G, vvsi–vsi White gold 750/000 resp. 18k HALLMARKS Hallmarked "750" and "18" as well as with maker's mark "GK" in the shank DIMENSIONS RIng face approx. 1.6 x 1.8 cm / 0.63 x 0.71 in RING SIZE US approx. 5 1/2 UK approx.
