This unique variety of diamonds, just like the brilliant white diamonds, were discovered in 450 BC. Back then, diamonds with better clarity were only in demand. Salt and pepper diamonds relatively have low clarity : they have the greatest number of inclusions and they are the most noticeable. The inclusions of a salt and pepper diamond may vary from being just a few black marks, to completely black, and therefore they are not graded very well in terms of one the 4C's - Clarity
Heavily included diamonds such as these, need much more care when they are polished because they need to be cut with a different technique. Therefore most salt and pepper diamonds are sent to specialized cutters to ensure that the job is done to perfection, without harming the originality of this diamond.
