Alexandrite & Diamond Ring 7.35 Carats, Rare Color Change Gem Certified
About the Item
A 7.35-carat transparent natural Alexandrite color change gem is surrounded by a halo of 21 brilliant white diamonds in this new 18K white gold split shank ring. All at an exceedingly low price for such a gemstone.
The 12.26mm x 10.48mm oval brilliant step-cut Alexandrite gem changes from yellowish-green in the daylight to a brownish-orange under incandescent lighting. Several gemstones change color under different light —garnet, sapphire— but Alexandrite is the most prized color-change gem. It's a rare gemstone, adored by collectors.
The vast majority of Alexandrites are small. Most stones present a modest color shift, often from one shade of brown to another. Rarely do you find an Alexandrite that leaps from one side of the color wheel over to the other like this one; changing from yellowish-green to brownish-orange. For an Alexandrite to shift toward its complementary color is a highly desirable quality in the gemstone, and its enormous 7.35 carat size makes even more important.
The green has depth and fire. It resembles a fine peridot. And in the midst of being green, this sensitive stone will flash orange at you. It is like an organic light meter. You know the color temperature has changed because your green gemstone is now reflecting cinnamon tones back at you. It is one of the most beautiful Alexandrites I ever had the opportunity to acquire.
Alexandrites change color when moving from daylight to incandescent light. In the image right before the lab certs, you can see the stone reacting to an incandescent light in another room: see the hint of orange within the green?
Once you enter lower color temperature territory: in front of a roaring fire, at dinner with candles, or beneath old-school tungsten lightbulbs, and even some of the "old-style LED lights with a warmer color, you will look down at your hand and see that your peridot-green ring has now changed its mind and become something warm, and in mixed lighting, you will see both colors at the same time. The color change will not be as pronounced in these images because our eyes automatically adjust to changes in color temperature. The color change is this pronounced in the lab. But as I said, in real life, the shift is more subtle. When you have your hands warming in front of the fireplace, the green stone will now be brownish-orange, but so will the light on your skin, your clothes, and everything around you.
The ring is a size 6 ½ and your jeweler can resize it for you. It ships with a certificate from the NGI gem lab of Singapore that states the Alexandrite is 7.35 carats, transparent, and changes from yellowish-green under daylight to brownish orange under incandescent light.
