Early Victorian 18K Yellow Gold, Silver and 6.0Cts Diamonds and Blue Enamel Ring

About the Item

Early Victorian 18k Gold, Silver and 6.0cts. Old Mine Cut Diamonds and Blue Guilloché Enamel Ring c.1840s Believed to be a descendant of the bagues au firmament (or, “rings of the heavens”) popularized by history’s most notorious figure of wealth, Marie Antoinette, this magnificent Navette from the mid-Victorian era is a diamond lover’s delight. Twelve old mine cut diamonds (making for a total of 4.5 carats) circle an ovular head of solid silver. Inside their glittering perimeter, brilliant dark blue guilloché enamel work serves as a backdrop for a stunning center 1.50 carat old mine cut diamond, giving the piece the appearance of an eye in the sky formed by a dazzling constellation of stars. Thought to have been a custom piece for a woman of aristocratic stature, it is a ring as rich and alive with history as it is with opulence. Most antique rings were created by skilled artisans who meticulously handcrafted each piece. This level of craftsmanship allowed for intricate designs that were often time-consuming to produce. This includes filigree work, hand-chasing, granulation (tiny metal bead-work), and hand-piercing to create delicate openwork patterns. The jewelers noticed that diamonds look whiter when set in white metal and not in yellow. The white gold was not invented back then yet and platinum was too hard for jewelry tools...
