Egyptian Revival 1930 Art Deco Sculpted Cobra Ring 18Kt Yellow Gold with Rubies

About the Item

Art deco egyptian revival cobra ring. Beautiful three dimensional ring, created during the art deco period with Egyptian revival patterns circa 1930's. This unusual cocktail ring has been sculpted in the form of a cobra in solid 18k yellow gold with highly textured surfaces showing the actual design of a cobra snake in attack and guard position with its mouth wide open and showing its fangs. Rubies: The eyes are mount with a pair of round cut of natural vivid red rubies, with a combined weight of 0.04 carats Weight: 22.25 Grams, (14.26 Dwt). Size: 6.25 sizeable. Measurements: 28 mm by 22 mm (Inches) and raise 15 mm over the finger. Hallmarks: Stamped with the gold assay mark, "18KT". Cobra snake is associated with the sun god, the kingdom of Lower Egypt, the kings and their families, and several deities. A symbol of protection, it guards the gates of the underworld, wards off the enemies of the royals and guides the deceased pharaohs on their journey through the underworld. The cobra represents the goddess Wadjet, a very ancient goddess who is associated with royalty. When the snake is worn over the king's brow, its head raised and hood dilated ready to attack if needed, it is called a uraeus. The uraeus constitutes the consummate symbol of royalty. History: Between the 1860 and 1890, ancient cities were discovered, such as Troy, Pompeii and Alexandria. Archaeological excavations in Egypt, Greece and Rome, discovered artistic pieces of these ancient cultures. These fabulous discoveries, stimulated cultural trips to these countries, popularly called "grand tour". Being the case that the enthusiast visitors bring back small objects, like souvenirs to be assembled into jewelry. The starting point of these trips were in the cities of Rome and Venice. this is why the craftsman's of these cities created small and interesting objects with ancient characteristics like this bracelet. Revival jewelry: The styles from the renaissance and middle ages, begun in the 1850’s, The Renaissance and Egyptian revivals were joined by a classical revival of Greek and Etruscan styles to conform a new aesthetic. As a result of the construction work on the Suez canal in the mid-1860’s and the Egyptian excavations of Auguste Mariette and the resultant exhibit of Egyptian treasures at the exposition Universelle in 1867, a fascination for all things Egyptian and ancient cultures developed.
