About the Item

Mid-Century natural star ruby cabochon and diamond ballerina cocktail ring in platinum and white gold, Europe, 1950s/1960s. Of circular shape, this ring features a ruby cabochon bezel-set to the center, surrounded by a row of 18 channel-set baguette-cut diamonds and another row of 26 claw-set round brilliant-cut diamonds, all stones in an open-back coronet setting with an openwork scrolled gallery, leading to a fluted platinum shank with split wirework shoulders. Ruby: estimated 8.3 carats (approximate diameter 11.20-11.00 mm; height 6.70 mm); slightly purplish-Red color (assessed); strong red fluorescence (assessed); treatment opinion: natural, unheated. Diamonds: 26 round brilliant-cut and 18 baguette-cut; estimated 1.80ct total round brilliant-cut and 0.90ct total baguette-cut; G-I color (assessed); VS-SI clarity (assessed). Finger size: 47 (EU), but it can be sized up or down. Gross weight: 16.76g. Star rubies belong to the phenomenal corundum category because of the star-like rays that intersect across their faces. The star effect is called asterism and it is caused by reflections from tiny, needle-like inclusions that are oriented in several specific directions, reflecting light to form a star that appears across the surface of cabochon-cut stones. Start ruby has long held an important place in the colored stone market. It enjoyed immense popularity during the 1940s and 1950s, traditionally symbols of wealth and success, sought by collectors like famed financier J.P. Morgan. Perhaps the most impressive star ruby in existence is the 138.70ct. Rosser Reeves star ruby, on display at the Smithsonian Institution.
