  • Modernist Brutalist Amethyst, Diamond and 18k Yellow Gold Ring, circa 1960
    Located in Aspen, CO
Brutalist 18K ring with amethyst and diamonds probably by Arthur King an American designer in the 1960's and 1970's. His jewelry can be seen in major museums such as MOMA and the V & A in London. He was also collected by many of the major movie stars and celebrities of the time such as Elizabeth Taylor, Lena Horne and Barbara Hutton. The ring, though not signed, has many of King's inimitable stylist nuances. Such as the powerful and organic prongs, the decidedly nugget like patina coupled with the obvious cie perdue or lost wax creation of the setting and the unusual design that was not mass produced. This ring is well made, the 6 diamonds, estimated to weigh .46 cts., are all H, near colorless, and very slightly included (VS1), they are set in 18K white gold, the rest of the ring is 18K yellow gold. The center pear cut natural amethyst is a pure vivid purple color with slight red undertones. This stone is estimated to weigh 12 cts. This ring is a fine example of "Brutalist Jewelry", with its very obvious "natural approach" to setting the stones, the texture of the gold which has the nugget...
