Victorian Coral Ring Originally for a Man

About the Item

Do you want to talk about "hard to find"? How about, "impossible to find"? When I began my search for an antique coral ring designed specifically for a man, at first I thought it was simply going to be a challenge. After a year or so I understood, I'm just never going to find it. Men's coral rings? They were never a thing. Except, alas, they were. I finally located that elusive ring and it is English, made in the Victorian era somewhere near 1880. Hand-crafted from what tests as 15K rose gold. It bears no hallmarks because it has been resized at some point along its journey but I cannot believe this ring was created anywhere else on earth; it is English right down to the 14 proper slender claws that hold the approximately 11mm x 10.20mm cabochon of natural Mediterranean coral securely in place. Beyond being merely a beautiful and rare ring —both of which this ring most certainly is— it is a highly durable ring. It was built not just for a man, but for a man who worked with his hands. Elegant it is, delicate it is not. Robust and rosy, strong and enduring. All qualities I love in a person and equally in a ring. What modern woman wouldn't love such a ring? The rose gold is a brilliant ruddy partner to the tomato-red of the coral. It's just such an unusual pairing. I normally see coral in either yellow or white metals; rarely rose. Red is a difficult color to work with, to get right. So it's no wonder that coral is so frequently paired with yellow or white metal. But here the risk paid off because the eye of the jeweler was spot-on: the tomato red and the coppery red work perfectly together as a team. Currently, the ring is a size 9 ¾ and could be resized by your local jeweler.

  • Coral Ring with Diamonds, Midcentury
    Located in Southbury, CT
A gleaming lipstick red cabochon of natural precious coral is claw-set into a hand-fabricated 18K white gold mounting in this midcentury ring. Three eye-clean and near-colorless diamonds are set on either side like parenthesis and weigh around .35 carats in total. Measuring 22mm x 12mm, the coral is a stunning, evenly-toned vivid lipstick red with the high-gloss polish of a grand piano. This is a bold, impeccably crafted ring is so perfectly chic. This is a pristine cabochon of coral in the most prized color coral is found in and without any trace of a bluish tint. This color and quality of coral is becoming more elusive by the day. The rich red coral you see here comes from coral branches that are close to the surface of the warm waters off the coast of Italy. It's this coral that has been largely over-harvested. As a result, most of the coral must today be brought up from deeper water and it does not possess this intense red color. This is a truly remarkable ring, not merely for its beauty and vintage character but also because of its immaculate condition. This magnificent gem-quality red coral ring with...
