About the Item

In 17th century Paris, theatrical audiences were very familiar with "Pierrot," a stock character that appeared frequently in commedia dell'arte stage productions. Troupes of Italian players performed in scenes featuring these well-known characters, which are still widely used in theatrical productions in the modern day. Pierrot represents a sad, expressive clown, who yearns for the love of a woman named "Columbine," another familiar stock character. He has been depicted in several fashions, but is generally shown unmasked, with a painted white face, loose buttoned blouse, and simple skull cap. At other times, he has been costumed more elaborately, wearing a wide, frilly collar and pointed jester's hat. This rare and unusual "Pierrot" clown ring from the Art Nouveau era (ca1890) is an incredible work of art! The highly artistic design comes to life in 14kt gold and sterling silver, and features an elaborate diamond-encrusted centerpiece. A moonstone cameo represents Pierrot's face, complete with sculpted features, wavy hair, and a soft expression. The alluring moonstone exhibits a strong pearlescent flash when turned in the light, accentuating its hand-carved details. Surrounding Pierrot's neck is an elaborate feathered collar, while a conical cap rests atop his head. Both are lined with delicate old Rose Cut and Mine Cut diamonds, forming a glittering array! Two luscious red rubies are incorporated into the design, adding a perfect pop of color. One is bezel set within the collar, and the other rests at the brim of the hat. Completing the design is a curvy gold band, which is stamped with a "14K" purity mark inside the shank. An impressive collector's piece, the ring looks simply magnificent when worn, and would make a rare addition to any antique jewelry collection! The ring has a finger size 6, but could be resized. The centerpiece measures 1" tall (from the tip of the hat to the base of the collar), and is about 5/8" wide. When worn, the highest point of the design rests about 3/8" above the finger. The gold band measures 2mm wide at the back. The ring is in excellent antique condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold and sterling silver setting. All of the diamonds and rubies are intact and securely set, as is the carved moonstone. The cameo reveals a tiny chip located just below the chin, which is not particularly noticeable when the piece is worn, and does not detract from the overall beauty and rarity of the piece. Small imperfections are quiet commonplace among antiques, and since the chip is only detected when viewed under close inspection, we recommend leaving the cameo as is, rather than attempting to polish or replace it.
