About the Item

The Burmese ruby is the most sought after ruby in the world. It is renowned for its spectacular color, level of saturation and hue as well as depth of color. These gems can also contain secondary shades of color – mainly that of purple, pink violet or orange. A purple secondary (as in this ruby) is the most desirable as this shade in combination with the red creates the appearance of a deeper and richer color. When a Burmese ruby is viewed in person, it becomes clear as to why men and women alike, royalty and the masses, patricians and plebeians connived and contrived, struggled and seduced, loved and betrayed, engaged in combat and conquered all for a variety of the mineral corundum. The color is unlike that of anything you may have experienced – a luscious red, silky smooth and deeper in hue than can be “measured” by the human eye. It is as though the red glows from deep within the gem. With no evidence of heat treatment, this Burmese oval brilliant step cut ruby has a known weight of 3.31 carats. It measures 9.36 mm by 7.77 mm by 5.22 mm in actual dimensions. The gemstone is cradled in a mount of 18k yellow gold with 4 sets of double prongs. The rest of the mount is platinum with each shoulder embellished with a pear, almost heart shaped diamond with a total estimated weight of .85 carats (H-I color, VS2-SI1 clarity) for the pair. Date: Modern estate. Measurements: 3/8 of an inch (1.0 cm) in length north to south on the hand and rises 1/4 of an inch (0.6 cm) in height off the finger. Weight of 3.8 grams (2.5 dwt). Ring Size: US 6-1/4 (UK M; Euro or Int. Circum. 52.5 mm; Int. Dia. 16.7 mm; Japan 12) and easily can be sized to fit most. Hallmarks: PT; 950; an unidentified maker's mark. Origin: European; ruby is Burmese.
