Men's Ring Cat's Eye Chrysoberyl Ideal "Milk and Honey" Coloring 12.5 Carat
Chrysoberyl is one of the rarest and most valuable gemstones on the planet yet most people have never even heard of it. The Chrysoberyl Cat's Eye was popular in the Victorian period then again in Mid-Century jewelry. The ideal coloring for this rare and fascinating gemstone is described as "milk and honey" where honey forms the background coloring of the gem and the "milk" is the line of chatoyancy that travels across the stone causing it to "wink." I love a gem that can do a trick: change colors or display a radiant star in the sun. This gem does indeed have a trick and it's a good one: the milk-white line slides back and forth through the honey of the stone as you move your hand. It's mesmerizing. The natural and untreated stone measures 13.37 mm x 10.24 x 9.47 for a weight of 12.50 carats. Crafted in thick and sturdy 18k gold, this ring lacks all embellishments such as diamond side-stones because, frankly, it's a superior color to the majority of chrysoberyl cat's eye gems —which tend to a be less-appealing yellowish-green color. That's why you almost always see this rare gem set along with diamonds or pearls. This spectacular specimen needs absolutely no sleight-of-hand or window dressing: the high, glassy and translucent golden cabochon sits forward in a plain, classic gold mount: it is as beautiful as it is rare and unusual, as visually fascinating as a falling star. There is no maker's mark and I believe the ring to be of 1980s origin. Unisex by design, this is a ring for somebody who wants something that is extraordinarily rare and precious; opulent and at the same time, ever so slightly out of left field. This is a ring that attracts attention because it's so completely unique and beautiful. People are accustomed to seeing a star sapphire. And most people think they're pretty cool. People are not accustomed to seeing a white line of light slide through a glassy cabochon of honey. It stops people in their tracks. "What is that stone?" I have been asked every time I've worn this ring. Chances are, you've never seen a chrysoberyl cat's eye ring in person and you'll almost certainly never run into anybody wearing one. Certainly not one this fine. If you're looking for a powerful signature ring that's as unique as you, here you are. Currently a size 9, this ring could easily be resized by your local jeweler. It rises approximately 10 mm from the top of the finger. Visit thebluepaisleyfox on Instagram to see a video of this ring.
