Ancient Egyptian Steatite Scarab Amulet 22K Yellow Gold Swivel Signet Ring

About the Item

Ancient Egyptian steatite scarab amulet high carat gold swivel signet ring The Scarab ring design, also called a Scaraboid Seal, was developed as an amulet/signet ring with the scarab symbolizing immortality, transformation and protection. Originally the scarabs were tied to the finger with thread and later, gold wire thread was used to create the design on the shoulders as seen in this ring. During the Second Intermediate period the scarab was mounted with a gold wire throught its center so that the ring could swivel. The base of the scarab was often inscribed with a proverb or prayer. The most famous scarab ring is the golden scarab of Nefetiti which dated to the 14th century BCE and was discovered in the Uluburun shipwreck. Scarab rings were given as royal diplomatic gifts during the reign of Amenhotep III. These beautiful rings remail relevant today as symbols of regeneration, the never-ending cycle of life and testaments to the powerful allure of Ancient Egypt. Size: approximately 6 US, will fit a larger finger due to the ring's configuration The scarab is ancient Egyptian set in a 20th century high carat gold setting of very fine quality. Condition: Very Good Height of scarab: 15mm Width of scarab: 1omm The versatile design of this ring allows for wear as a pendant.

  • Rare Ancient Egyptian Carved Carnelian Frog Amulet Swivel Ring 18th Dynasty
    Located in London, GB
This rare Egyptian carved carnelian frog amulet dates to the Eighteenth Dynasty of the New Kingdom, circa 1300 BC. Frog amulets, depicting the goddess Heket, were commonly worn by both the living as a fertility charm and the dead to provide rejuvenation and a long afterlife. The ancient amulet is pierced horizontally and set into a later gold swivel mount, probably dating from the late 19th century. The design of the gold mount inspired by rings worn by the ancient Egyptians and Etruscans with its swivel bezel and coiled wire on the shoulders. The immense number of offspring made the frog an important symbol of fertility in ancient Egypt, and carved frog amulets were worn by women hoping for an easy delivery. This is exemplified with the goddess and protector of birth, Keket, who was depicted as a frog. After death, frog amulets would be placed within the wrappings of mummies, both men and women, in hope of a successful rebirth in the afterlife. The association between this amphibian and rebirth may have been induced by the fact that every year, millions of frogs spontaneously appeared out of the river mud and filled the fields after the annual inundation of the Nile. This caused the Egyptians to believe that they spontaneously generated themselves out of the river mud. The influence of frogs in Ancient Egypt can be seen in the language, the hieroglyphic sign for "one hundred thousand" was a tadpole, and one of the Egyptian terms denoting "frogs" is whm-anx, meaning literally "they who repeat life." Similar examples of ancient Egyptian carved...

Dimensions of Scarabs: 13x19x10mm HISTORY Along with the pyramids, sphinxes, and mummies, the scarabs are one of the most familiar objects representing Egypt. Scarabs have been collected for centuries and were particularly popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. “Scarabaeus sacer is the Latin name for the dung beetle. Today most people do not have great appreciation for this insect, but this variety and several other members of the family Scarabaeidae, were sacred to the ancient Egyptians. The Egyptians connected the beetles’ habits of rolling balls of dung around their eggs with the concept of eternal life in the after-world. The meaning of Kheper or Scarab was “”becoming, being, metamorphosing, generation, new life, virility, and resurrection.”” Representations of the beetle were an essential symbol in Egyptian art and a whole class of seals and amulets were made in its image. These little amulets of beetle form often bear hieroglyphic designs on their base, including good luck wishes, the names gods, and the names of individuals both noble and common. The most obviously interesting scarabs are those with names of kings, of the royal family, and of officials. Pharaohs were worshiped as gods, and the names of the current pharaoh or a popular deceased pharaohs, such as Thothemes III, were used to bring good luck to the bearer. Scarabs were manufactured in a wide variety of materials including steatite, faience, stone, glass, and bone, from the Old Kingdom...
