BC2000 Egyptian Middle Kingdom Blue Plaque Faience Ring

About the Item

Unique ring comprised of a faience plaque with a cartouche dating to the Middle Kingdom of Egypt. The color of this archaic plaque is striking. The material from which the plaque is made is like ceramic or glass but the center is made of minerals and quartz. The compressed stone mixture is then heated and “glazed” like pottery. The plaque is 2 sided with hieroglyphics on each side. The faience plaque is mounted specimen style on a swivel ring, so it can serve as a ring on the finger or worn on a chain or placed in a specimen cabinet of curiosities along with other art objects in a collection. In the 18th and 19th centuries people traveled abroad on the grand tour and made other journeys to gain insight into the larger world, thus becoming collectors. The person who owned this piece probably was an enthusiast of Ancient Egypt and displayed this in his collection. This demonstrated to others that you were a highly cultured and sophisticated person. The hieroglyphics on this plaque reveals a form of a deity or mythological figure and animals. The plaque shows cobras flanking the central cartouche, indicating it was a seal for someone significant- perhaps a high minister of state. On the reverse, there is a solar disk (the circle with a dot within), the astronomical symbol of the sun. The ring can be worn as a ring (size 7-7.5), hung vertically in a display case or displayed flat in a glass bottom table. The last photo shows an unmounted plaque currently in the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art of with a cartouche of Amenhotep III.
