Georgian Gold and Carnelian Signet Ring Large 19th Century Antique Seal Ring

About the Item

A large antique English Georgian era gentleman’s gold signet ring, circa 1830. In the centre there is a flat-cut and bezel-set octagonal carnelian gemstone. These stones in these types of rings would typically be engraved with a coat of arms or family crest and then pressed into hot wax to seal letters and deeds. Remarkably however, this one has survived 200 years without being engraved - a real rarity! The gold mount is hollow in construction, typical of the period and is crafted in 9K gold. The exterior of the ring displays an intricate floral repoussé work design. Repoussé refers to a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. The ring tapers towards the back and there is a French control mark on the back of the ring to indicate imported 9K gold. UK size Z, US size 12.5 (large!) Carnelian measures 12mm x 11mm. The ring weighs 7.68 grams in total. The ring is in good and wearable condition despite its significant age.

The conical stone has been set in a later high-karat gold ring mount, the hoop is hollow and of circular cross section which widens towards the bezel.
