Large 19th Century Georgian 14K Yellow Gold Onyx Intaglio Medusa Signet Ring

About the Item

Impressive Georgian period 14K yellow gold onyx intaglio signet ring depicting Medusa. Early 19th Century The story of Medusa is one of the best known in Greek mythology. It is most appropriate that her image appears on a Georgian era signet ring as a symbol of protection. Perseus used the head of Medusa as a powerful weapon in battle, notably to defeat the mighty Atlas and later, against Polydectes, to free his mother from a forced marriage. He then presented the Gorgon's head to Athena who placed it on her shield Aegis. The head of Medusa is symbolic of strength, protection and empowerment. The intaglio is large and beautifully rendered, set in a period 14K yellow gold setting. Condition: Very Good, age appropriate surface wear, wonderful patina Size: 9 US Marks: Maker's mark on the interior Tested for 14K gold Intaglio measurements: 18mm by 13mm Provenance: from an important private collection of fine period intaglio rings
