About the Item

This slender, one-of-a-kind, handmade 18K yellow gold ring is the delivery vehicle for one of the finest Australian black opals I have ever seen. Measuring approximately 8.39mm x 4.96 x 2.65, this is not a huge opal; but it's impact is significantly greater than it's size. Black opals from the Lightning Ridge mines in Australia are the finest black opals in the world. The most common color for a black opal to display is blue; the rarest and most valuable color is red. And that's precisely what makes this opal ring so spectacular: It is predominately red, with streaks of purple, orange, yellow and blue. The true test of an opal is how it performs under low light conditions and in the last photo, you can see how gorgeous the stone is when I turned off all the lights in the photo studio and only the dimmest light from a gray late afternoon was filtering through the window. The vibrant colors burst through the shadows. I deeply love Australian black opal rings but I am haunted by them, too. Because I love the red opals and they are so very difficult to find. An opal with a patch of red is not the same as an opal that is overwhelmingly red. The goldsmithing is exquisite. I appreciate the open back, showing the stone; proving that it is a solid black opal and not a doublet or a triplet. The cabochon has a high, glassy polish. I am a Certified Professional Gemologist and have advanced training in jade, pearls and opals. The ring is currently a size 8.5 and your jeweler could resize it for you.

Black Opal, Diamond Pendant, Lightning Ridge, Australia, Vivid Red Flash
Located in Southbury, CT
Black opals from the Lightning Ridge mines in Australia are the rarest and most valuable opals on earth. And Lightning Ridge black opals that display a vivid red flash are the most valuable opals of all. This pendant is a perfect example of why these rare, precious opals are so coveted. With a superb cut and gleaming high polish, this solid (not a double or a triplet) Australian black opal from the Lightning Ridge mines has an organic, loosely triangular form and weighs approximately 2.42 carats. The gem flashes brilliant, vivid red, yellow, turquoise, purple and cobalt blue. The natural beauty of the stone has been maximized to its most magnificent potential by a skilled lapidary artist. Set within a custom 18k yellow gold frame -that exposes the rear of the opal, so that you can see with your own eyes that this is a solid black opal- and featuring a bail set with a .03ct VS brilliant round diamond. A 20" .4mm solid 18K Italian gold chain...
