Men's Georgian Garnet Ring from France with Deeply Carved and Engraved Shoulders

About the Item

This rare and stunning original Georgian-era men's ring features a 10.5 mm x 9 mm approximately 4-carat pyrope garnet cabochon bezel-set and closed-backed into an elaborately hand-engraved and carved mounting of the richest, most buttery 18K yellow gold that has developed a soft and smooth patina over the ages. It slides into the finger like a circle made of air. And it is absolutely perfectly comfortable. When you look at the stone face-on, it is dark. But move your hand even the slightest amount and you will see the sultry flashes of deep wine red and purple that reside within the gem. It's interesting, this ring. By day, it's all business: it's not flashy. The color of the garnet doesn't leap out at you like a spinel or a ruby. But at night, it's a different story. Lit by candles or a fire, beneath incandescent bulbs, the ring glows like a fine wine. It becomes romantic. It attracts the eye. It has certain magnetic qualities. It becomes a mysterious orb of light within wings of gold. A ring like this would have been worn by a man of great wealth and influence. Created in the early 1800s and almost certainly of French origin, this two-hundred-year-old ring is in absolutely beautiful condition. It has clearly been treasured and known no abuse in its lifetime. Georgian-era jewelry in general is rare; men's rings from the Georgian period are rarer still. This fine example would make a beautiful wedding band for a man. Or just a signature statement ring that telegraphs impeccable taste and pedigree instead of "bling." Of course, there's no reason why a woman couldn't wear this ring. And like 99% of all men's rings, it won't get snagged on clothing. It rises approximately 5 mm off the surface of the finger. Currently a size 10, this rare and glorious antique ring can be resized by your skilled local jeweler. Note: due to the closed-back setting of the garnet, this ring should not be exposed to moisture. Wipe with a soft, dry cloth to clean and do not immerse in water.
