  • Art Nouveau Jade Chinese Serving Bowl with Spoon Pewter, Jade & Carnelian
    Located in Southbury, CT
Created after the turn of the previous Century between 1915 and 1920, this gourd-shaped serving bowl with its accompanying gourd-shaped serving spoon is rich with Art Nouveau details as well as meaning. The gourd has, for centuries, been imbued with great meaning in the Chinese culture. It has been used not just as life-sustaining food but as a container to carry water, medicine, and other necessities of life. So it's unsurprising that the humble vegetable has historically been held in the highest regard, often used as a visual metaphor for longevity, health, and prosperity. This gourd-shaped serving platter was hand-fabricated in pewter; a popular metal choice in China (and throughout the world) during the Art Nouveau-era in which this platter and spoon were created. So we have not just a gourd-shaped platter, but it features an intricate hand-etching of a gourd on the interior as well. Pewter vines and leaves decorate the upper and lower portions of the bowl —or platter— and provide a clever and convenient handle. Bezel-set within the leaves are cabochons of natural and untreated jadeite jade from Burma and reddish-orange carnelian. The oval jade cabochons are various shades of green, from pale celadon to a darker forest and there is moss-on-snow as well. These stones possess an old, pre-industrial-revolution polish. Moving along to the serving spoon, we see that here, too, the gourd symbolism continues with a gourd-shaped bowl for the spoon. At the apex of the gourd we find bezel-set jadeite and carnelian cabochons and then traveling north we encounter a glorious handle made from pale greenish-white...
