About the Item

This rare 19th century full Hunter Agassiz Pocket Watch is lever set with a high grade movement. The 14K solid gold case is beautifully embossed and deeply engraved. White Porcelain Face. Black Roman Numerals. Blue Steeled Target Spade Hands. Second Hand Sweep at 6 o'clock. Red enamel outer 5 second dial. Engraved and embossed 14K solid gold double cased outer and inner dust covers. Case by George Courvoisier and George Wilcox of CW and marked for CW Mfg Co, USA. HISTORY. Agassiz et Compagnie was established in Switzerland by Auguste Agassiz in the 1830s hand crafting high grade watches under the name of Agassiz. By 1867 when he and his nephew Ernest Francillon built a new, modern factory nearby on the shores of the Suze River in the meadow of Longines the Compagnie des Montres Longines Francillon SA. was formed and from that time on, they produced their fine timepieces under both Agassiz and Longines names. By the 3rd quarter, 19th century they began exporting their watches to the US, both private labeling for prestige American Jewelers and under their own brand names. Since the pocket watches were primarily made only in 3 sizes, they could ship the timepieces only and have them cased in the US in cases that suited the taste and budget of the buyer. CONDITION: In overall excellent antique condition. Recently serviced and keeping good time on a full wind. All cases in excellent condition with no dints or warping. No fading, cracks or hairlines. Crystal is clean. Timepiece: Marked A AGASSIZ Serial # 66963 on the nickel plate. Case: Marked for CW and 14Karat Gold, US Assay on the interior of the case. Weight by scale: 57 grams.
