This is one of the most unique wrist watches I have ever seen. The workmanship is exceptional and it should be since it was produced by the legendary house of Benson's. One of Europe's most famous houses. The J.W. Benson watch company was founded in 1847 by brothers James William Benson and Samuel Benson. They began by selling watches and jewelry from a small shop in London, but quickly expanded their business and became one of the most respected watchmakers in England.
Benson watches were known for their high quality and precision, and were often used by the British military and government. The company also held a number of royal warrants, and Benson watches were worn by Queen Victoria and other members of the British royal family.
In addition to manufacturing its own watches, Benson also imported and retailed watches from other countries. The company was particularly well-known for its selection of Swiss watches, and Benson was one of the first companies to introduce Swiss watches to the British market.
Benson watches were also known for their innovative designs. In 1885, Benson introduced the first waterproof wristwatch, and the company also produced a number of other groundbreaking watches, such as the first watch with a luminous dial and the first watch with a stopwatch.
Benson continued to produce high-quality watches until World War II, when its factory was bombed. After the war, Benson resumed production, but the company never fully recovered from the war damage. In 1973, Benson was sold to the Royal Jewellers, Garrards, and the brand name was eventually acquired by Mappin and Webb in the 1990s.
Today, J.W. Benson watches are highly sought-after by collectors. They are known for their high quality, precision, and innovative designs. Benson watches are a reminder of the golden age of British watchmaking, and they continue to be appreciated by enthusiasts around the world.
The bracelet on this watch is fully extendable and will basically fit any wrist, man or woman's. It is not and every day watch though, but it does keep adequate time. It is "pin set" which means you must push in the pin at 2:00 to set the time. If you are looking for a one of a kind item for a gift or for yourself this is certainly a watch to own and wear, on some rare occasions though.
