1942 Lord Elgin Caliber 559 21 Jewels. Christmas 1943

About the Item

Approximately 1942 model 4806A. 14 karat yellow gold filled “Lord Elgin” that has had a total restoration. You know me, I have to give some history to you better understand what you are looking at. The better you are informed, the more comfortable you will feel This is a caliber 559, 21 jewels. Look at the movement, it is so clean and none of the typical oxidation that usually creeps into movements that are 70+ years you. This is what has been completed with this watch Complete movement tear down service Dial was refinished back to original status The case was hand polished to bring out the luster of gold filled NOS crystal installed The case was ultrasonically cleaned to remove years of grime Genuine 14MM Alligator dark brown band (remember it is a Lord Elgin) In 1910, the Elgin National Watch Company pioneered its first wristwatch, leading ahead of other American watch companies. Elgin watches produced many of the self-winding wristwatch movements such as 607 and 618 calibres (bumper wind), and 760 and 761 calibres (30 and 27 jewels). Elgin watches also played a role in history during World War I and World War II. In WWI, the manufacturing site workers taught repair techniques to hundreds of U.S. military soldiers. While in WWII, Elgin began to craft timepieces and other watch parts for the military. Lord Elgin Watches are often made with gold plated cases and leather straps. This collection consists of classic dress watches for men, perfect for business and formal evening occasions. These watches come in different shape cases: square, circular, and rectangular. The style of Lord Elgin watch is very elegant and refined. Interestingly, no two models look similar to each other. Since I was young I’ve been around watches of all kinds. Everything from a $20 Swiss army watch to a $100,000 Patek Calatrava. For some reason though the most represented brand in my father and grandfathers collections was a brand called Elgin. Every ounce and a while I would see a Lord Elgin. Before I myself got into watches both my father and grandfather had died and in my father’s case I had to sell the lion share of his collection to pay for probate and various other debts he’d accrued. I was able to hold on to one Elgin and one Lord Elgin but before I could find anything about these watches I sold them. I was wondering if anyone here knows what the difference between the two are? Is Lord Elgin analogous of a gold Rolex to an Oyster steel one? Or are they different in another way or altogether? I know this is an odd topic but since I’m getting into watches I’d like to get an Elgin or Lord Elgin and am seeking any and all information I can on them as they will hold a special place in my collection. Thanks. I have a pic of each watch for fun. It wasn’t until 1910 that Elgin produced its very first wristwatch, leading most other American watch companies by a good number of years. That same year it built the Elgin National Watch Co. Observatory to maintain scientifically precise times in their watches. Despite this tireless dedication to accuracy and excellence, Elgin never made the highest-quality watches in the world, nor did they make the cheapest. Like Waltham, they happily seized the mid-market. “Elgin was not in the watchmaking business for glamour or major expense that would limit their buyers’ market,” said James Campbell, library and maintenance supervisor of the National Association of Watch; Clock Collectors in Columbia, Pa. “Elgin produced affordable and dependable watches, mainly for the working man but they also made-high end watches as well. Their top-of-the-line products tend to get overshadowed by the number of watches produced.” Campbell said the railroad-grade Elgins were expensive to buy at the time, especially the models/grades of Veritas, Father Time, B.W. Raymond and Lord Elgin, to name a few. “These models were produced with a higher grade of finish and could be considered glamorous but only to the person who opened the back of the watch,” he said. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and often times the beauty of the watch was hidden unless the movement was placed in a view back case. Sometimes only the watchmaker was able to see the beauty of the watch.”

Welcome to Vintage Watch Corner. First a PSA (Public Service Announcement) Vintage Watch Corner was selected as the Vintage watch source to supply “period” watches (1918-1926) for a major motion picture. This picture is being filmed in Oklahoma as we speak. It is a validation of the authenticity of my restorations. What a great looking Elgin. This watch is from the late 1930’s, It is Elgin’s answer to the “waterproof” watch. The crystal has a gasket between the case and crystal, the case back has a gasket between the movement retainer ring and the case back, that by the way threads on. I love the oversized crown; it adds a distinguished look to a “functional watch. This watch was targeted for the outdoors person who wanted a watch that could withstand the elements, hence multiple gaskets and oversized crown. I love the two tone dial. It has a golden minute...

  • 1919 Waltham "Wandering Second" 15 Jewels with Stunning Movement
    By American Waltham Watch Co.
    Located in Raleigh, NC
I have a shameless commercial plug for my shop. Many of my watches were used in the filming of an Epic Film due to be released in May 2023. The studio selected my shop due to the authentic restoration couple with the time period of 1919-1926. I will mention two actors who are in the upcoming movie, Leonardo Di Capra and Robert Di Nero… more to come. It was an honor and validated my shop for its authentic restoration practices. What a treat! Have you ever run across a “Wandering Second” WW1 / Trench watch. But……it is not your ordinary offering, look at the gold colored screws and gold-colored wheels. What a treat. This combination is very difficult to source in operating condition today, so many have abused as Father Time has passed us by. This is a 15-jewel movement, this was better than most that were 7 jewels, it was more reliable. This style is called a cushion for its shape which was popular in the early wrist watch era. The often-housed round dials with no seconds or a traditional second hand at six o’clock. Many of the WW1 wrist watches use 0 size movements, see below was size reference. 5/0s 26.25 mm 1.033 in 1 130 in 4/0s 27.09 mm 1.067 in 1 115 in 3/0s 27.94 mm 1.100 in 1 110 in 2/0s 28.79 mm 1.133 in 1 215 in 0s 29.63 mm 1.167 in 1 16 in I used the terms Trench Watch. What exactly is that? History about Trench Watches What is a “Trench Watch” ? They were created using 3-0 and 0 size pocket watch movements and installing into watch cases that were meant to worn on the wrist. The watch movement companies would send their movements to independent jewelers, who in turn would select the cases to house the movement. So the ordering process might go like this. A customer walks into a jeweler, with the help of the jeweler, the customer selects a 15 jeweled movement, then they go on to the case selection. The jeweler may recommend a higher end case manufactures like Depollier, and then it is the style of case as many manufactures had several different styles. Once a complete selection was made, the jeweler put it together and delivered the watch. That is how many Trench Watches (wrist watches) were born in the early 1900's. The movements often came from women pocket watches...
