Marcus & Company was a premier old American house. The company was originally called Jacques and Marcus but in 1892 Jacques retired and the company was renamed Marcus and Company. They operated in New York all though the deco era and were renowned for their clientele and their impressive designs. The company was sold to Gimbals in 1941 when the family members decided to move on.
This piece is a classic example of an art deco watch fitted with a beautiful and high grade movement by I.W.C. You see the quality of the movement in the last image. Done with gold jeweled bushings and gilt plates, it really is the height of workmanship for the day. The dial is done in sterling silver with numbers and printing enameled into the plate. The dial was produced by Stern Freres the company that bought Patek Philippe in the early 1930's. The Stern family still owns the Patek Philippe watch company.
