Artist Commentary:
Aluminum can-tabs chained together with safety pins are layered, massed and attached to an MDF backing creating a dense sparkling texture. The can-tabs are reflective, glinting in the light, catching the eye of those who pass by them. These shield-like, glittering wall pieces have the presence of valuable treasure, but closer inspection reveals that the treasure is made from can-tabs, one of many common disposable items that continuously pass through our hands.

In James' paintings, he explores how uncertainty can lead to meaning and understanding. How harmony can be experienced even within tension and chaos and how the recognizable can rise out of purely abstract form. In his abstract paintings he responds to these phenomena by creating contemporary icons – works meant to encourage contemplation and meditation.
James' more recent works have evolved from the romantic representational ideal into the symbolic, abstract archetype. He comes from a classical background inspired by the great romantic landscape painters such as Turner, Lorrain, Friedrich and Moran, his recent work is more influenced by the work of artists like Klee, Miro, Rothko, Pollock, Riley and Richter.
James creates complex abstractions layered in familiarity and veiled in mysteriousness. The unorthodox methods he uses to apply and move oil paint allow him to create compositions that are formally beautiful – infused with tension and drama but also expressive of the spiritual, symbolic, mysterious and eternal. Steve Brudniak is an American contemporary artist, actor and filmmaker, known for highly crafted, surreal assemblages invested with science elements and unusual characteristics. Brudniak pioneered use of many unconventional mediums including Tesla coil lightning, magnetic fluid, gyro mechanics, and biological preservations. Pieces generate ideas and themes of spirituality and psychological function.
His work is in the collections of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the San Antonio Museum of Art, The El Paso Museum of Art and The Art Museum of South Texas, many private collections and hundreds of books and publications. His “Astrogeneris Mementos” became the first assemblage sculptures exhibited in outer space.
The monograph, “The Science of Surrealism - Assemblage Sculpture of Steve Brudniak”, (2013) documents thirty years of the artist’s career, with a foreword by Guillermo Del Toro.
