Untitled
By David Smith
Located in Palm Desert, CA
"Untitled" is a painting by artist David Smith. The work is signed and dated in the upper left "David Smith (symbol) 1936". When David Smith set up a workshop on the Brooklyn Navy Pier in 1933 to learn direct-metal techniques, he shared the space not with artists, but with professional welders. Yet as he stated in 1964, ‘…all my early friends were painters…I never conceived of myself as anything other than a painter because my work came straight through the raised surface.’ Picasso and Cubism would be dominant influences in Smith’s work. He understood that Picasso imagined the world as a sculptor might, and not necessarily limited to the unavoidable impact of Cubism. In addition to pursuing a kind of rethinking of the world in three-dimensionality on his own terms, by the late 1920s, Picasso had shown interest in surrealism. That meant drawing not as a depiction of reality, but rather as a reconfiguration of the body in an assemblage of often precariously balanced, interconnected forms — some expressed in a three-dimensional form, others as drawings or paintings. Those processes are reflected in this work by David Smith; three fanciful totemic assemblages set within a landscape perspective of ground, mountains, and sky and whose presence is surreal enough to cast shadows under a presumed solar presence. Untitled, 1936 embraces surrealism, yet also serves to demonstrate the extent to which his thought processes are inextricably linked to sculpture and related to scale, spatial orientation, and three-dimensionality. With that in mind, it is not surprising to know that Smith saw no demarcation between sculpture and painting, or that a painting such as Untitled (1936) can exist outside of planning or design for future three-dimensional work. Provenance: Estate of David Smith, New York Hauser & Wirth Private Collection Exhibition: Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, ‘David Smith: Skulptureen, Zeichnungen [David Smith: Sculpture and Drawings]’ Dusseldorf/DE, March 14 – April 27, 1986 (travelled to: Städtische Galerie im Stäelschen Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt/DE, June 19 – September 28, 1986: Whitechapel Art Gallery...

"Sur la rivière (Marne)" - On the River Marne - Hand Colored Lithograph
Located in Soquel, CA
"Sur la rivière (Marne)" - On the River Marne - Hand Colored Lithograph Serene depiction of a house along the Marne River by unknown artist "Charlot." This piece was commissioned and printed by Camilla Lucas Publishing in New York. A two-story house with a red roof sits on the bank of the river. Lush trees line the banks, some of which are depicted with orange-brown leaves, indicating that autumn has arrived. The color in this piece was added by hand. Titled "Sur la riviere (Marne)" in the lower left corner. Signed "Charlot" in the lower right corner. Presented in a wood frame with a double mat. Frame size: 20"W x 16"W Image size: 11.5"H x 9"W In 1928, Hungarian-born Sidney Zoltan Lucas founded "Camilla Lucas Publishing" which encompassed a wholesale art publishing house and a retail art gallery. This business was both wholesale and retail and dealt in reproductions of antique, modern, and contemporary prints. It also sold original art including etchings, lithographs, and paintings. Starting in the 1930's and continuing into the 1950's, Sydney Lucas traveled to Europe periodically and contracted with French and Flemish artists to publish their work under the banner of the "Paris Etching Society." During his career, Sydney published many thousands of images. He brought art into the homes of people at all levels of income through his etchings, serigraphs, woodblock prints, restrikes and reproductions. The various subjects included Redouté and Prevost Flowers, Barraband and Gould Birds, Piranesi, French Landscapes, Urban Scenes, Women, Children, Animals, Hunting and much more. Later on in the 1950s, Sydney and his wife Phyllis Lucas became the first North American publishers of original signed, limited edition lithographs by the famous surrealist artist Salvador Dali. They worked directly with Mr. Dali over several years and the three created such fine images that in 1985 the Lucas’ Collection of limited edition lithographs from Salvador Dali’s paintings were displayed alongside his original paintings at the Salvador Dali Museum...

'Abstract, Turquoise and Gray', Paris, Picasso, Andre L'Hote, Guernica, Benezit
By Dora Maar
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed verso with artist monogram 'DM' for Dora Maar (Argentine-French, 1907-1997); additionally impressed, upper left, with Dora Maar Estate stamp, Maison de la Chimie sale, Paris; October, 1998. In addition to her central role as Picasso's model and lover, Dora Maar served as his constant muse during the period of his creation of Guernica for which she also served as model for the lantern-holder, appearing at upper right. Prior to embarking on her two-year relationship with Picasso, Maar had already produced a widely-respected body of work and was celebrated as an influential and cutting-edge photographer. Nevertheless, it is her high-profile relationship with Picasso and her own personality- both in publications about Picasso and in those dedicated to her own life and work- that have acquired particular significance in art-historical literature. Maar's close link to the Surrealists, however, derived from her personal radiance and enigmatic personality as well as to the conscious and politically-informed artistic perspective that underlay her cutting-edge photomontages of the 1930s. Her increasingly radical political views during this period reinforced Picasso's own awareness of the deteriorating international political situation and of the civil war in his homeland. This heightened awareness culminated in the creation of "Guernica', his supreme artistic and political statement of the 1930's. Born in 1907, Henrietta Theodora Markovitch adopted the pen name of Dora Maar during the first years of her photography career. Growing up in Buenos Aires and Paris, she learned to speak French, Spanish and English fluently and, from 1927 on, attended the Art Academy of Andre L'Hote in Montparnasse. At the Academy, she studied painting but, by the end of the 1920s, she had transferred to the Ecole de Photographie de la Ville de Paris. In the early 1930s, she founded a photographic studio together with Pierre Kfer, who was later to make a career as stage designer. Numerous fashion and advertising photography shoots resulted from this collaboration and these were soon followed by her first Paris exhibitions. Dora Maar's photographic style during the 1930s show clear, surrealist characteristics. In her photographs and photomontages, she frequently played with shifting proportions, thus echoing an important feature of surrealist pictures. This tendency was augmented by the combination of disparate objects, which robs the photographs of their character of reflecting extreme reality, converting them to expressions of inner visions and psychic states. In parallel to these surreal photographs, Dora Maar produced sobering documentary photographs of her urban environments in Paris, London or Barcelona. Repeatedly, she records, in her photographs, the underprivileged, the unemployed and homeless, the socially disadvantaged and the physically deformed. It was precisely the simplicity of these photos that enabled Dora Maar to give the day-to-day and the ugly a magnificent monstrosity in which the beautiful and the horrible blend into one another. This recorded reality is thus accompanied by a level of inner associations, fears and visions. This present work, painted in the 1930's, remained in Dora Maar's possession until the end of her life, and shows her early interest in abstraction and her preoccupation with the complex inter-relationships of color and form. This painting is accompanied by a first edition copy of...

Refreshment and Intermission
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This painting is part of our exhibition America Coast to Coast: Artists of the 1930s Refreshment and Intermission, tempera on board, 11 x 19 inches, c. 1930/40s, signed lower middle, exhibited at Groom's one person show at Closson’s Gallery, Cincinnati, OH, March, 1943 (see The Cincinnati Enquirer, March 7, 1943, section 3, p. 4); provenance includes a private Ohio collection; presented in a period gold painted frame About the Painting Refreshment and Intermission is part of a series of paintings of Amish subjects Grooms started in 1938 based on his travels in Pennsylvania. These tempera works reflect the Regionalist impulse to paint local scenes far away from big cities. Focusing on both people and landscape, Grooms' compositions tell the stories of the uniquely American experience of the Amish. “Grooms paints the Amish people with as much understanding of type and appreciation of the plastic quality as any artist who has approached this challenging subject," noted the art critic for The Cincinnati Inquirer when reviewing Grooms' solo exhibition at Closson' Gallery, "In his current show, ‘Refreshment and Intermission,’ is a case in point. Here the absorbed concentration of people eating is described without an ounce of sentimentality. He has made the most of the interest between groups and of the conversations, both humorous and serious. The work has the quaint simplicity of a Lord’s Supper...

Corkscrew Willows with Stairs - Hand Colored Drypoint Etching California Adobe
Located in Soquel, CA
Delicate and detailed etching by Orpha Klinker (American, 1891-1964). At the edge of an old Adobe building, a staircase leads to the second floor. The stucco on the walls of the building is cracked, revealing the stonework below. Next to the building is a garden with Corkscrew Willow trees. One of her first projects with which Orpha impressed the public was a notable series of her large color portraits of California pioneers in the L.A.TIMES under the heading of "Speaking Of Pioneers." This led to another series on landmarks and famous tales of early California including oil paintings of historic adobes, buildings, and trees of California. Signed in plate, lower left. Paper size: 8.5"H x 10.5"W Mat size: 10"H x 12"W Orpha Klinker (American, 1891-1964) graduated from Polytechnic High School, L.A. and later studied at U.C.L.A. Art School and at the Cannon Art School. Artists Paul Lauritz and Anna A. Hills of Laguna Beach were her first art teachers. She continued her study of art at the Julian and Colarossi Academies in Europe. Some of her earliest work was in designing. Many pages of her fine pen work drawings appeared in Los Angeles newspapers, illustrating the fashions of the day, not only in clothes but in furniture and other things. Then for a time she did her work in New York City and later with the Ladies Home Journal in Philadelphia. From the Mexican border to Death Valley she roamed, meeting and painting portraits of such characters as Death Valley Scotty, Shoshone Johnny, the ancient Indian who supposedly saw the first white man come to Death Valley, Emanuel A. Speegle, "The Last of the 49'ers" (over 90 years of age) and others. Orpha was active in keeping alive the memory of one historical event in particular, the signing of the Treaty of Cahuenga ending the Mexican War...

Music (attributed)
By Philip Kran Paval
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This sculpture is part of our exhibition America Coast to Coast: Artists of the 1930s Music (attributed), brass and wire construction, c. 1936, 28 x 14 x 5 inches; perhaps exhibited at Hollywood Riviera Gallery, 1936 (third prize); provenance includes Estate of Jon Spencer Helfen (Los Angeles, CA About the Sculpture In 1935, Philip Paval bought a box of metal in a “blind auction.” Paval, a painter, sculptor, and jeweler, had hoped the box contained silver. To his dismay, it was brass. Seeing an opportunity, Paval started to make sculptures from the brass sheets. His subjects included Cinema, Hollywood, Radio, Dance, Aviation and Music. The works were well-received with the Hollywood crowd and critically acclaimed. Actor and comedian, Ben Bard, purchased four of them for his theater, and novelist and screenwriter, Vicki Baum ordered four more for her drawing room. Movie director King Vidor also purchased them. Los Angeles Times art critic, Arthur Millier, described Paval’s “contraptions” as “ingenious, decorative, different.” Paval exhibited these works for several years in the late 1930s, including at the American Artists’ Congress Gallery in Los Angeles in an exhibition called Formalism and Abstraction in 1938 and at a solo show at Stendahl Galleries in 1939. The appeal of these works must have been irresistible, as a 1936 Los Angeles Times article noted, “Two feet of brass art has been stolen from the Hollywood Riviera Galleries. The work is an abstraction. It portrays the spirit of music and rested on the grand piano in the main hall. The work of Philip Paval, it won third prize in the current gallery exhibition at the gallery.” One can only wonder whether this is the “contraption” which was pilfered from the gallery nearly one hundred years ago. Given the description of the work, its subject matter and size, it seems likely. About the Artist Philip Paval was a sculptor, painter, and jeweler. Born in Denmark, Paval was apprenticed to a silversmith and studied art in Denmark. He immigrated to the US in 1919 and first worked as a merchant seaman in New York. The following year, Paval settled in Los Angeles where he later opened his own jewelry shop featuring works he designed and produced. Paval became a favorite in the entertainment world, making a good living selling silver...
