"Orientalist Interior" Watercolor by Philippe Jullian Ex- D.D. Ryan Estate
By Philippe Jullian
Located in Bristol, CT
Elegant & fabulously rare, original Philippe Jullian (1919-1977) (ink signed LR) watercolour depicting a lavish Moorish opium salon interior with a reclining nude portrait on the wall and two monkeys with their turban clad handler. Sagittarius Gallery, NY label inscribed Jullian No. 18 on verso Art Sz: 8 3/4"H x 11 1/8"W Frame Sz: 16"H x 18"W w/ Hermes orange mat & antique bamboo frame Provenance: The estate of D. D. Ryan (1928-2007), noted fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar, an associate of Halston and a regular on best-dressed lists! Another widely appreciated achievement is her association with the creation of Eloise, the fictional little girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel. Eloise began as a character that Kay Thompson, a cabaret singer, portrayed to amuse her friends, of whom Ms. Ryan was one. Ms. Ryan urged her to write a book, put her together with Hilary Knight, the illustrator, and never stopped pushing her to finish the job. The result was “Eloise,” published in 1955 and a best seller the next year, and its popular sequels. “The book would never have existed without D. D. Never,” Mr. Knight said in an interview Thursday. “She would have just dropped it and gone on to something else.” Beyond her historic Eloise moment, Ms. Ryan thrived at the crossroads of New York’s fashion and artistic worlds, seeming to make a statement every time she dressed, almost always in clothes she made herself, always recognizable with her famous precisely stylized eyebrows. Her first job in Manhattan was as an assistant to the photographer Richard Avedon; she was photo editor at Harper’s Bazaar under the legendary editor Diana Vreeland, and she designed the costumes for Stephen Sondheim’s 1970 Broadway musical “Company.” Her social circle included Cole Porter, Andy Warhol, Mr. Sondheim and Truman Capote. When she recommended a new pair of sandals or a piece of costume jewelry — only “really good costume jewelry...

Original pen and ink illustrations for Charles Dickens 'The Pickwick Papers'
By Hablot Knight Browne
Located in Woodbury, CT
English illustrator, etcher and painter. Best known as the illustrator of the novels of Charles Dickens, under the pen-name Phiz. Browne had little formal training as an artist. He sporadically attended the St Martin’s Lane Academy life-class and was apprenticed to the line-engraver William Finden (1787-1852). In 1834 he cancelled his indenture and established an illustrators’ workshop with fellow apprentice Robert Young, producing etchings and watercolours in preference to the more laborious line-engravings. In the spring of 1836, he met Charles Dickens who was then looking for someone to illustrate The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club which was originally issued in monthly parts. Robert Seymour (1798-1836) provided the illustrations for the first two instalments before his suicide. Robert Buss (1804-1875) illustrated the third instalment, but his work was not liked by Dickens and the remaining instalments were illustrated by Browne. Browne initially signed himself ‘Nemo’ and then ‘Phiz’ (a depicter of physiognomies) to harmonize with Dickens’s ‘Boz’. He went on to illustrate most of Dickens’ novels. Browne’s long career as an illustrator, including work for Charles Lever...

"The Duke of Sussex" by Rex Whistler 1937 Ink & Coloured Wash Drawing
Located in Bristol, CT
An original ink & coloured wash drawing by the Rex Whistler (1905-1944) depicting "The Duke of Sussex" tipsily approaching The Queen 'Victoria' & to the left, The Prince Consort playing chess, all assembled in a state room in a rococo cartouche manner topped by upper 'L&R' corner gouache crowns on pearl grey paper then published by Nash Magazine February/ March 1937 as illustrations to 'The Court Circle' by Laurence Housman Thence our original work on paper on offer being the 2nd in the series of four Provenance: The Estate of John Teed Esq~ description featured on pg 91 in: 'The Works of Rex Whistler' by Laurence Whistler (his brother) & Ronald Fuller pub. 1960 by Batsford Press Since birdseye maple framed in a lavender mat. Frame Sz: 16"Sq Image Sz: 9-1/8"Sq Artist Bio: Reginald John Whistler was born in Britain on 24 June 1905, at Eltham, greater London, the son of architect and estate agent Henry Whistler and Helen Frances Mary, daughter of Rev. Charles Slegg Ward, vicar of Wootton St Lawrence, near Basingstoke, Hampshire.[1] In May 1919 he was sent to boarding school at Haileybury, where he showed a precocious talent for art, providing set designs for play productions and giving away sketches to prefects in lieu of "dates" (a punishment at Haileybury, similar to "lines" whereby offenders are required to write out set lists of historical dates). After Haileybury the young Whistler was accepted at the Royal Academy, but disliked the regime there and was "sacked for incompetence". He then proceeded to study at the Slade School of Art, where he met Stephen Tennant, soon to become one of his best friends and a model for some of the figures in his works. Through Tennant, he later met the poet Siegfried Sassoon and his wife Hester, to both of whom Whistler became close. Upon leaving the Slade he burst into a dazzling career as a professional artist. His work encompassed all areas of art and design – from the West End theatre to book illustration (including works by Evelyn Waugh and Walter de la Mare, and Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels) and mural and trompe-l'oeil painting. Paintings at Port Lympne Mansion (within Port Lympne Wild Animal Park), Plas Newydd, Mottisfont Abbey and Dorneywood among others, show his outstanding talent in this genre. During his time at Plas Newydd he may well have become the lover of the daughter of the 6th Marquess of Anglesey, the owner of the house, who had commissioned him to undertake the decorative scheme. Whistler and Lady Caroline Paget are known to have become very close friends and he painted numerous portraits of her, including a startling nude. Whether this painting was actually posed for or whether it was how Whistler imagined her naked is a matter of debate. His most noted work during the early part of his career was for the café at the Tate Gallery, completed in 1927 when he was only 22. He was commissioned to produce posters and illustrations for Shell Petroleum and the Radio Times. He also created designs for Wedgwood china based on drawings he made of the Devon village of Clovelly. Whistler's elegance and wit ensured his success as a portrait artist among the fashionable; he painted many members of London society, including Edith Sitwell, Cecil Beaton and other members of the set to which he belonged that became known as the "Bright Young Things". His murals for Edwina...
