Final state published by in an editon of 12 by Garton & Cooke in 1982 (Nicolson published an edition of 40 in 1927). In states iii and iv, the swallow of the title was removed. In state iv, the sky was re-etched and the cross-hatching was slightly finer. Signed in pencil. Garton writes, page 11: "The design was based on the Anglican chapel-of-ease is the farmyard of Bulisge at Allinston near Chippenham....The print was originally entitled The First Swallow, but the swallow was burnished out before the 1927 edition....Fifty years later new work was effected in the worn-out areas of the sky and distance to produce prints which, in his opinion, were better than those of the original edition." Robin Tanner was an English artist, etcher, and printmaker. He followed the visionary tradition of Samuel Palmer and English neo-romanticism. Alex Katz was born in 1924 to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York, as the son of an émigré who had lost a factory he owned in Russia to the Soviet revolution. In 1928 the family moved to St. Albans, Queens, where Katz grew up. From 1946 to 1949 Katz studied at The Cooper Union in New York, and from 1949 to 1950 he studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine. Skowhegan exposed him to painting from life, which would prove pivotal in his development as a painter and remains a staple of his practices today. Katz explains that Skowhegan's plein air painting gave him "a reason to devote my life to painting." Every year from early June to mid-September, Katz moves from his SoHo loft to a 19th-century clapboard farmhouse in Lincolnville, Maine. He first got to know Connecticut when he spent several summers at the artist’s colony at Cos Cob immediately before the First World War. Housed in a double archival mat and a Hogarth 36.50 x 30.50 x 1.25-inch Hogarth frame with gilded corner ornaments. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Cornfield depicts Fen lane as it leads from East Bergholt towards Dedham; a village in the borough of Colchester. A flock of sheep are followed by a dog as the path winds towards figures active in a cornfield. A boy, prone and with his face on the surface of a stream, slakes his thirst. The church in the distance is thought to have been an invention on Constable's part. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1826, Constable's The Cornfield became one of the artist's most celebrated works. It was reproduced in mezzotint by David Lucas in 1834 and sold by J. McLean and Hodgson, Boys and Graves, and Rudolph Ackermann. This print, however, derives from a posthumous collection of Constable's works entitled 'English Landscape Scenery,' edited by H.G. Bohn and published by Thomas Boys in 1853. The series consisted of forty mezzotint engravings on steel plates; all of which were produced by Lucas. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Cornfield is one of Constable’s best-known works. It was also the first of his pictures to enter a public collection. Mat line outside the image; otherwise excellent condition.A fine impression with plate tone, printed on antique cream laid paper. Signed and numbered in ink. Housed in a 16 x 20-inch archival mat, suitable for framing. In 1899 Briscoe acquired a studio in Malden, Essex, and bought a 3 ton cutter which, with his young family, he would spend eight or nine months a year, sailing to Calais, along the Belgian coast and through the Dutch waterways, constantly sketching and painting in both oil and watercolor. In 1922, after a meeting with the etcher James McBey, Briscoe returned to etching once more producing plates of some of his sea sketches.
