At the top, it has a pair of stylised birds decorated with punched triangles. Their long beaks seem to suggest Hornbill or Kalao bird. Ancestral Senufo cast bronze face mask (Kpelie) from Côte d'Ivoire West Africa. Made using the lost wax technique. Traditionally, the 'Kpelie' is an ancestral mask worn during funeral rites, initiation ceremonies, weddings and births. The function of the mask is determined by the crest at the top of it's head and the subtle scarification markings it carries. The female mask will normally have a plug on it's mouth with the male masks having an open mouth and longer protruding jaw. Made from a soft wood/pine Material with hand carved detail and original nailed sections still in place. Its likely this mask would have been painted when first created but now the paint has mostly worn away. Some elements of colour are still visible as is some staining. The hanging rope has broken off, but this mask can be displayed with a metal hook. A great piece that would make a cool piece of wall art. Size of inches approx.: H 7” x W 6” x D 4.5” Completely solid in structure and form, with faded surfaces and some loss of detail in the with almost all its paint faded away.
