Dutch genre painting 18th JANSON Oil on canvas Village fair peasants Kermesse
Located in PARIS, FR
Johannes JANSON (Attributed to) Amboyna (Moluccan Islands), 1729 - Leyden, 1784 Oil on canvas 47 x 57 cm (62 x 72 cm with frame) Trace of signature lower right Monogrammed and dated on the back "1755"Inscription on the recto « Johannes Janson » Very beautiful frame of the 18th century in gilded wood Good condition (just a bit of thinness, a repair and a few repaints, well restored) As for the painting by Johannes Janson exhibited in the Louvre museum, our painting is also a "typical example of retrospective pastiche - much appreciated in the 18th century. – of recognized masters of the Golden Age, the specialists in Dutch rustic landscape Potter, Adriaen van de Velde or Dujardin. Recognizable in our painting is the way Janson represents trees, and animals (the horse in particular on the left is recognizable). And also the silhouettes of his small characters painted in bright colors. This village fair is a rich composition with many characters, musicians, drummers, peasant men and women, children. The scene is very cheerful and it has the charm of the festive atmosphere of the Dutch countryside with many picturesque details represented such as the dancers with a glass or a pitcher in their hands, the dishes or baskets which circulate filled with food, the child playing with a dog or the musician with the violin who animates the assembly. The vivid colors are characteristic of Dutch 17th century genre...

Pair of Neo-Greek Bronze Floor Lamps by F. Barbedienne, France, circa 1860
By Ferdinand Barbedienne
Located in PARIS, FR
Height without/with lampshade : 168/185 cm (66,1 / 72,8 in.) ; Base : 43 x 43 cm (16,9 x 16,9 in.) Beautiful pair of neo-Greek floor lamps in bronze with double patina, composed of cylindrical lamps, decorated on the body with a rotating frieze representing women dressed in the Antique style weaving and spinning, surmounted by lampshades with cut sides in red pleated silk with golden braid. They are placed on pedestals from which hang thin chains attached to the slender shaft decorated with stylized leaves and flowers, resting on a tripod base decorated with large palmettes and ending in lion’s paws. The stylistic repertoire used here, composed in particular of palmettes, masks, and nymphs, evokes Greek Antiquity, as does the reuse of forms of furniture and objects such as tripods and antique vases. The rediscovery in the 18th century of the archaeological remains of Pompeii and Herculaneum allowed artists of all disciplines to draw inspiration from Antiquity while reinterpreting it. This trend did not fade and, in the 19th century, many personalities fitted out their interiors with neo-Greek furniture, as was the case for the Maison Pompéienne built in 1856 by the architect Alfred Normand (1822-1909) for Prince Napoleon, or Empress Eugénie who bought from the Maison Barbedienne pedestals inspired by antique tripods. Related work : Pedestal model presented by Maison Barbedienne at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1855. On this occasion, Empress Eugénie bought it for her bathroom in the Château de Saint-Cloud. This model pleased the Empress so much that she ordered two other pairs in 1858 for her boudoir in the palaces of Compiègne and Fontainebleau. (see photo attached) Photo showing a floor lamp similar to ours in Empress Eugénie’s bedroom in the Château de Compiègne (Oise), in Architecture intérieure et Décoration en France des...

Japanese Lacquered Tebako 'Box'
Located in PARIS, FR
Tebako box with three compartments in golden and nashi-ji lacquer, decorated with golden, red, and kirigane lacquer, golden persimmon tree leaves, among rocks. The compartments are of increasing size from the top. The decoration is in continuity. Persimmon has been cultivated in southern China for more than 2500 years and is believed to have been introduced to Japan in the 8th century. The veneer is a tree with very hard wood, similar to ebony. According to a legend, one specimen survived the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, close to the epicenter. It is therefore in Japan a symbol of strength and longevity. It is also the national fruit of the country. It is eaten as a traditional dish during New Year's Day celebrations. Tebako literally means "portable box...

Gold and Micromosaic Bracelet, circa 1860-1870
Located in Paris, FR
Gold bracelet composed of two rigid, articulated elements that form a circle. The bracelet is decorated with a central medallion featuring a micromosaic. The medallion is ringed with cannetille motifs and lines of gold that form arabesques. The quality of metalwork is reminiscent of Etruscan craftsmanship. The central medallion represents a pastoral scene with two peasants next to a fountain. The man is milking a goat while the woman is refreshing herself at the fountain. Roman ruins stand in the background. This composition was inspired by Francesco Londonio, a Milanese artist. The engravings of his paintings strongly influenced mosaic artisans during the second half of the 19th century. This piece presents several similarities with others from the Castellani jewelry...

Gerard Ter Borch Genre Scene "The Two Drinkers" Engraving 18th Century
By Gerard ter Borch the Younger
Located in Beuzevillette, FR
Humorous engraving typical of Flemish representations of the 18th century, representing two seated drinkers . We can see a woman with a glass in her left hand and a carafe in her right, while a man who probably drunk sleeps on the table. Beautiful achievement typical of the Flemish school of the 17th century. Gerard ter Borch - or Terburg - also known as "the young man" was born in 1617 in Zwolle near Amsterdam and died in 1681 in Deventer. He worked as a genre painter and portraitist and was very active especially in Münster and Amsterdam. He discovered his talent for drawing at the age of eight and became a pupil of his father Gerard ter Borch, known as "the old man". The Dutch painter Hendrick Avercamp supported Terburg. He studied with Pieter de Molyn (Dutch painter, draughtsman, engraver and publisher) for three years (1632-1635). He travelled extensively between London, Germany, France and Italy. He in turn became the master of his pupil Caspar Netscher...
