Untitled 1 (Graphic Abstract Painting on Paper in Peach, Red & Light Orange)
By Jenny Kemp
Located in Hudson, NY
Graphic abstract painting on paper in complementary shades of peach, light orange, and red with details of pale sage green
"Untitled 1" by Jenny Kemp, painted in 2019
gouache on paper, unframed
15 x 11 inches
Signed verso
Jenny Kemp’s abstract paintings are inspired by the artist’s desire to represent unseen phenomenon. With intricate and calculated line-work, the artist builds parallel layers against opaque backgrounds, while shifts in color and shape call attention to organic forms that give reference to the human body or atomic structures. Precise lines seem to vibrate the transitions of color in shades of ruby and blush red complemented by amorphous forms in peach and light orange. Two circles of pale sage green contrast against the areas of red and orange. The drawing is currently unframed, measuring 15 x 11 inches.
About the artist:
Jenny Kemp received a BS in Art from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and an MFA in Painting from the University at Albany. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country, most recently at Gold/Scopophilia* in Montclair, NJ and the Mandeville Gallery at Union College in Schenectady, NY. She has been featured in publications such as 100 Painters of Tomorrow published by Thames & Hudson, New American Paintings, The Huffington Post, Seattle’s City Arts, New York Times, and The New England Review. Kemp is also a recipient of the 2015 NYFA fellowship in painting and the 2015 Emerging Artist Award recipient from the Art Center of the Capital Region in Troy, NY. She sits on the board of Collar Works, an art space dedicated to the support of emerging and under-represented artists exhibiting challenging and culturally relevant contemporary artworks in Troy, NY where she lives and works.

Waves of yellow contrasts against earth toned hues of sienna and teal while precise lines seem to vibrate the transitions of color. The abstract painting is part of a series of paintings on linen that can be hung together.

Hard Rain (Contemporary, Abstract Painting in Orange and Umber Palette)

Located in Hudson, NY
oil on canvas on unique artist made stretcher
36 x 74 inches
This curved canvas was painted by abstract artist Christopher Engel in 2006. The abstract expressionist style painting contains dramatic splashes of dark umber against a vivid orange and yellow background. A sturdy wire spanning the back of the painting provides for instant, professional-quality hanging.
Christopher Engel is represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery based in Hudson, NY.
Artist Statement:
The Fan Shaped Paintings evolved from the process of mixing paint in paper coffee cups. As I noticed the intriguing arrangement and patterns of color and shapes in the mixing cups I began to set the cups aside to save those images. Years later, I began unfolding the stacks of cups I had saved to see the images and patterns of color. I was also attracted to the fan-like shape of the opened cups. The spontaneous nature of the color and shapes on my palette of “coffee cups” became the genesis of the creation of the Fan Paintings.

ABOUT:
Every year, the gallery owner curates the show to best exemplify the 56 exhibited artists’ strengths and aesthetics, remaining cohesively linked by Robin’s extensive knowledge of her artists and of photography. “This is my favorite exhibit, even though it takes months to curate and a week to install,” says Robin. “It is my curatorial showcase.” From floor to ceiling, the walls of the gallery rooms are a mosaic of nearly a hundred photographs, their various sizes, color schemes and subject matter expertly laid out to fit together like the pieces of an eclectic puzzle.
This year’s invitational image, “Beach Samba” by Patricia Heal, is a portrait of a woman in a large, orange-red sunhat, whose downward gaze obscures her face entirely. Blurring the line between photography and painting, the color palette and uniquely large grain pattern of the photograph is reminiscent of Georges Seurat’s pointillism...
