Contemporary Still Life Painting of a view into the Guest Bedroom
Acrylic on Canvas in Custom Frame
16 x 12 inches, 19.5 x 15.5 x 2 inches framed in custom grey painted wooden frame
Signed en verso
In a new series titled Qu(i)e(t)er Interiors, Carl Grauer turns inward and brings us into an intimate space; his home. From a place of repose and safety, this environment provides warmth, comfort, and a stage to observe relationships among objects, beings, and the passage of light. His perspective tracks varied emotions, different points of view, and how the light is experienced by candlelight or sunlight reflected on walls and hardwood. “I found peace in observing the changes in light, and observing with slowness and mindfulness that comes during times of meditation.” Simple household objects are the subject of the rather complex compositions with layered perspectives. Grauer merges adept technical abilities with a penchant for authentic expression.
This painting recalls the Dutch masters with its composition and soft application of paint. Sunlight streams in through the bedroom window, raking across a bed made up with white cotton sheets, and pooling onto the brown hard wood floor. This work is intimate, tranquil and is exquisite in its technical rendering.
Artist Bio:
Carl Grauer is a painter based in Poughkeepsie, NY in the beautiful Hudson Valley. He primarily works in oil, painting mostly portraits and figure-based contemporary realistic paintings. Born in rural Kansas, Grauer left to complete his degrees in human biology and his MFA in medical illustration...

This painting is an exquisite example of the artist's unique ability to capture the very whimsical side of nature. Widely known for painting expansive views of the Hudson Valley where the artist often embarks on extensive hiking trails, Konigsberg also takes to painting more intimate and commonplace household objects. A coffee pot, salt and pepper shaker, or as in this case, a simple bouquet of long stemmed pink peonies careening over the side of a green vase; his use of oil washes capture both fluidity and structure. The fanciful treatment of the flowers calls to mind French Impressionist Toulouse Latrec...

Girl in Interior oil painting by Julio De Diego
By Julio de Diego
Located in Hudson, NY
Julio De Diego was a keen observer of the human condition. This work, painted in Chicago the year of his one-man show at the Art Institute, showcases his powerful vision, daring aesthetic sensibilities, and innate artistic skills. The quiet, steady gaze of the sitter as she nonchalantly relaxes with a disaffected look is almost enough to make the viewer not realize her skin was painted green. A careful assessment of the rest of the painting reveals many elements which appear "normal" at first, but are actually slightly distorted. Skewed perspective is utilized in a purposefully restrained manner - the sign of an artist with confidence - which De Diego had in spades. The sitter's outfit of yellowish/orange skirt paired with a belted green blouse and black Mary...

Thinking Eakins: Figure with Thomas Eakins Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum
By Judith Wyer
Located in Hudson, NY
Figurative painting of a male figure viewing paintings by Thomas Eakins at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City
"Thinking Eakins" painted by Judith Wyer, in 2020
oil on linen
18 x 14 inches unframed, 19 x 15 inches with white stained wood frame
Artist signature, verso
This figurative painting was made by Connecticut based artist, Judith Wyer, in 2020. The painting features a mysterious male figure looking intently at "The Thinker", a portrait of Louis N. Kenton, by Thomas Kenton. The figure in the painting stares at the viewer, as if in dialogue. Curiously, they are dressed in the same outfit and captured in a similar stance. Another famous Eakins portrait entitled "Artist's Wife and His Setter Dog", seen in the background, lends further intrigue to this peculiar painting.
Artist Statement:
Making a painting is a journey with an unknown destination.. In this respect, I consider my process much like a writer where the narrative seems to develop itself. The relationship of the word and the image is crucial. My work often begins with a photograph of a captivating image, a fleeting moment of everyday existence.
From this I begin the process of developing the narrative which most often requires numerous edits and lengthy periods of just looking at the work and not touching it. This can take years. The work and I grow together which hopefully yields a provocative and intimate elucidation of the human condition. Once I arrive on a title, which is almost never at the outset, everything comes into sharper focus and the work's form and meaning come into closer agreement. .
In fact, I never consider a piece finished. The challenge of one piece informs the next which sometimes leads to resurrecting an incomplete piece from the past. My attic is full of such unfinished works. The words of Diego Velazquez continue to guide me, "Es Verdad, No Pintura."
