Large and Richly Carved 17th Century Walnut and Oak Trunk from Spain
Located in Dallas, TX
A beautiful and robust Spanish trunk, the carvings on the front façade are large and vibrant, accented by a deep brown patina. The trunk was hand-carved in the 1600s by a master craftsman, using both oak and walnut woods. Large dovetail joineries, visible on the sides, add character to the trunk, without taking away from the magnificent carvings. Two large, pierced iron straps support the massive trunk lid, which is embellished with several thin moldings. Both sides have an ovate handle affixed by a pierced floral mount, above an arbalete apron. The sinuosity continues on the front apron, but in more dramatic fashion, with a series of counter curves. Above the apron is a raised area (also seen on the sides) adorned with a winged angel mascaron inside of a shaped console, flanked by a large rosette atop a vine that is surrounded by a foliate border. A similar foliate carving can be seen on the recessed section of the façade, encircling another well-carved cartouche. The upper scene consists of a heart surmounting flowering leaves (beneath a shaped escutcheon), flanked by a pair of niches filled with sunbursts over flowering vines, which are in turn flanked by larger sunbursts personified with a mascaron center. All four sunbursts are incorporated with a cross, which, when depicted with the heart, symbolizes “love for all mankind”. Our richly carved Spanish trunk...

Extremely Rare and Important Lacquer Japanese Trunk with 275 Family Crests
Located in Hudson, NY
Historically important and rare Japanese lacquer trunk with 275 family crests. This trunk, originally used for storing textiles, was commissioned by the Tokugawa Shogunate in the late Edo period to commemorate his allegiance with about 275 families associated with his court by using their family crests as the decoration. The crests are mostly rendered in gold leaf and there is some nashiji on the trunk's edges and on the interior of the lid. The bronze mounts are incized with more family crest imagery and show traces of the original gold leaf patina. All mon (family crests) are identified in calligraphy, also in gold lacquer. The main crest appearing on the center of the lid and again on the inside of the lid is that of the hollyhock. "The most illustrious bearers of the hollyhock as a family crest was one of the greatest bloodlines in Japanese history, the Tokugawa. Both the main shogunal line and branch families bearing the name of Matsudaira used variations of the hollyhock crest. Along with chrysanthemum and paulownia, the hollyhock occupied the pinnacle of prestige among Japanese crests." From Elements of Japanese Design, by John Dower. The underside of the lid has the dedication in calligraphy with another Tokugawa family crest. The text names the three hatamoto families (samurai families under retainer of the Tokugawa), Tayasu, Shimizu, Hitotsubashi. The calligraphy also mentions the prowess of the Tokugawa family, which back then was measured by rice barrels...

16th Century Italian Walnut Cassone
Located in Hudson, NY
This lovely and detailed cassone from Italy is made from thick single board walnut construction. This form of coffer was often made as a marriage gift and in pairs to house dowry goods,to store valuables and to display important objects in halls and against the wall in large rooms who's decoration would have been also in walnut with rich painted and gilded accessories and fabrics. Centered in the front carved wood panel is the coat of arms of the original owner while the flanking ends are done with carved walnut figures that terminate in architectural bases. The top has a finely carved dental frieze running the full length and to the sides just above the edge of the top and the trunk is raised up on large lion paw feet. The form and design comes from ancient Roman forms and has continued thru to the Italian Renaissance period. Please note how the carving is done in a left and right manner indicating that this was made for this coffer. In the 19th century it was common to cobble these together from different parts to sell to unsuspecting american antiques buyers who were acquiring old master paintings and...
