Hand printed silkscreen print, numbered and signed by Sir Peter Blake. The original photograph for the cover was taken at Michale Cooper's Flood Street Studio in Chelsea on March 30th 1967. The copyright of the photo remains with Apple, the Beatles management company. In 2007, after 40 years of trying, Peter Blake managed to get the Beatles to agree to publish a limited edition of 500 silkscreen prints on 410gsm Somerset cotton linter archive fine art paper medium, with the sheet size being 27 inches high by 26.25 inches wide. The image size being 19.5 inches square. Archival pigment inks were used with specialist glazing and an additional spot varnishing. 29 screens were hand applied to print the edition, being 27 colours plus 2 glazes. Every print bears the Apple logo embossed in the bottom centre. Published by Pete Smith of Pierre Optique, who negotiated the rights, Peter Blake was paid £10 for each signature and allowed to keep the 50 Artists Proofs. No 499 and No 500/500 were purchased by the Saint Giles Street Gallery and No 499 was embellished on the mount with original ticket stubs, bubblegum cards, official SPLHCB stamps issued by the Royal Mail along with other sundry paper ephemera and sent to Dublin to the Leinster Gallery to form part of their Unseen Beatles Show of Frank Herrmann...

Bryan Ingham (1936-1997) Erotisches Bild (1988) Oil on board 62 x 11 cm Provenance: Fracis Graham-Dixon gallery. Titled to backboard and dated 1988. Bryan Ingham was born in Yorkshire. For his National Service he joined the RAF, and spent his time in Germany as an airman. After demobilisation, his final report included the statement that "Ingham is an artistic sort of airman." In his spare time he had started painting in oils, and by the time he left the RAF he had completed a large number of paintings. He studied at St Martin's School of Art in London, where he had the tuition of a fine post-war generation of teachers who helped him to hone his draughtsmanship and other skills, and he swiftly showed a capacity for painting that drew the attention of his tutors and peers. On graduating he was offered and accepted a post-graduate place at the Royal College of Art, where in his second year he was awarded a Royal Scholarship and was a contemporary of a number of now better-known names including David Hockney. Ingham applied for and received a Leverhulme travel award to explore the sites of the great Renaissance painters, and spent many happy months engaged in this expedition. Gorbals Boys (1948) - Silver Gelatin Fibre Print (Photo by Bert Hardy/Getty Images Archive London) Possibly Bert Hardy's most famous image. Two boys in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. The Gorbals tenements were built quickly and cheaply in the 1840s, providing housing for Glasgow's burgeoning population of industrial workers. Conditions were appalling; overcrowding was standard and sewage and water facilities inadequate. The tenements housed about 40,000 people with up to eight family members sharing a single room, 30 residents sharing a toilet and 40 sharing a tap. By the time this photograph was taken 850 tenements had been demolished since 1920. Redevelopment of the area began in the late 1950s and the tenements were replaced with a modern tower block complex in the sixties. Life and work Born in Blackfriars, Bert Hardy rose from humble working class origins in Southwark, London. The eldest of seven children, he left school at age 14 to work for a chemist who also processed photos. His first big sale came in 1936 when he photographed King George V and Queen Mary in a passing carriage during the Silver Jubilee celebrations, and sold 200 small prints of his best view of the King. His first assignment, at age 23, was to photograph Hungarian actor Sakall at the Mayfair Hotel. Hardy freelanced for The Bicycle magazine, and bought his first small-format 35 mm Leica. He signed on with the General Photographic Agency as a Leica photographer, later founding his own freelance firm, Criterion. Picture Post and World War II In 1941, Hardy was recruited by the then editor Tom Hopkinson of the leading picture publication of the 1930s to the 1950s, Picture Post. 'Chinatown, San Francisco', gouache on fine art paper, by Edward Wilson Currier (1903). Spofford Alley in San Francisco's Chinatown is best known for an address (number 36) where Dr. Sun Yat-Sen plotted the overthrow of China's last dynasty. During Prohibition, it was the site of turf battles over local bootlegging and protection rackets. Today it is lined with seniors' community centres. However, the quiet alley livens up in the evenings when a Chinese orchestra strikes up a tune, mah-jongg games begin with a cascade of clicking tiles, and barbers and florists use the pretence of sweeping their doorsteps to gossip. In this artist's depiction, a man smokes a long-stemmed Chinese pipe under the awning and colourful lanterns hanging from the wooden supports while a child looks on. The artwork is interesting from several standpoints including architectural, cultural and historical. Shortly after this work was painted, the neighbourhood was completely destroyed in the 1906 earthquake that levelled most of the city.
