This antique pair of Gothic wall sconces for three lights or three candles each is another one of those antiques of which you immediately know that they are bound to find a new owner soon, because it ticks all the boxes. Perfectly handcrafted in the latter part of the 19th century these rare sconces have exactly the kind of patina that you wish to find on bronze Gothic antiques of this age. The heavy quality of the bronze and brass is right up there with the best you can find and the design of these decorative and meaningful works of Gothic art is extremely well balanced. The many perfect and all handcrafted Gothic elements in these three light candelabras are an absolute joy to look at. To us, the bronze gargoyle sculptures at the bottom are like the icing on the cake. What gargoyles stand for has been and still is subject to debate, but we best like the idea of them being there to frighten away evil spirits and bad energy. Mind you, the wires and the yellow tape that you now see in our photos will all be removed. You, the new owner, get to decide if you want to use them as candle candelabras or if you want us to rewire these sconces for you. We will do so free of charge and to the highest standard for safe and immediate usage upon arrival. When purchased by one of our American clients we will also attach American sockets inside the faux candles and also American power plugs. The four holes in each of the four bronze brackets make these large and impressive wall sconces very easy and safe to mount on your wall also. This top quality crafted, antique French chandelier is another great example showing that the French in those days were leading when it came to creating the best quality and detailed candle chandeliers. This particularly elaborate and sculptural specimen is extra special, because it could not be in better condition. In all our years of buying and selling antiques we don't think we have ever seen a bronze pendant or candle chandelier that is still as perfect and straight as this bronze work of beauty. Apart from being remarkably detailed and in mint condition and 'straight as an arrow' it also has grown the most warm and beautiful patina. It may be relatively small in size, but that does not make this rare chandelier any less impressive. You will rarely come accross a chandelier that is more elaborate and detailed than this bronze chandelier in the Style of Louis XIV. Mind you, Sun King Louis XIV was responsible for building the grand palace of Versailles and that grandness too can be found in this exclusive bronze chandelier. This excellent condition and top quality made antique of practical size is an absolute joy to own and look at. Both with the candles 'lit' and 'not lit' this chandelier will create just the right atmosphere in a small room or for example in a corner of a larger room over a smaller table. From 1820 until 1855 he worked as royal court painter of the Bavarian kings. He is known for his Neoclassical portraits, especially for the Gallery of Beauties at Nymphenburg Palace in Munich.
Born in the city of Mainz to a long-established family of engravers, punchcutters and die makers, Stieler received some artistic training from his father, August Friedrich Stieler (1736–1789). After the early death of his father, Joseph Karl autodidactically completed his apprenticeship and began his career as a painter of miniatures, which were increasingly sought after by bourgeois circles After Mainz had been occupied by French revolutionary troops in 1792, Stieler followed the expelled court of Prince-Archbishop Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal to Aschaffenburg. Here he met with the later Archbishop Karl Theodor Anton Maria von Dalberg, who became his most important patron and sponsor.
From 1802 to 1805 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the master class of Heinrich Füger. Stieler's portrait style was most especially shaped during his work in the Parisian atelier of François Gérard, a student of Jacques-Louis David. In 1808, he established himself as an independent portraitist in the city of Frankfurt and in 1810 travelled through Italy. From 1812 he worked at the court of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria.
In 1816, he again travelled to Vienna to paint the portrait of Emperor Francis I of Austria. Between February and April 1820, he worked on his portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven, which is probably the most well-known representation of the composer today. In 1847 he also painted the portrait of Lola Montez...

Over the years we have sold very few porcelain Limoges pieces and that is simply because these high value items don't find there way to the open market very often. So to have been given the opportunity to purchase a set as complete and remarkable as the one we are offering you here, more than made our day. Also, because we already know that someone will be thrilled to be able to own, use and enjoy this rare and beautiful set in their (new) home or, for example, in their holiday home. This vintage Limoges set of high quality and detail consists of the following:
- A practical size washbasin with gilt bronze mythological dolphin handles.
- Large mirror in stylish bronze frame with a mounted (or built-in) 4-light sconce.
- A porcelain shelf (for wall mounting) to go under the mirror.
- A bronze and porcelain, 4 light pendant light.
