This coffee table is a unique piece! In piano black lacquered wood it has been delicately decorated with copper leaves. Its beautiful square shape and its concave ends give it even more style. Its top reveals the beauty of the piece with its emerald green with bluish shades, which represents the depths of the water. The ripples that extend across the surface when an object is placed and form a series of small waves on the surface have been made with copper foil to further magnify the green color. More than a table, this beautiful piece was inspired by the work of the artist M. C. Escher "Rippled Surface". This special commission was made by a decorator in the late 1970s for an art loving client. The photos do not do justice to this exceptional piece which will find its place in a contemporary or classic interior Rippled Surface is one of Escher’s three key water reflection prints. The other two being Puddle and Three Worlds. In this case, Escher combined printing techniques. The water is actually a linocut, whereas the trees are a wood cut. A linoleum block is easier to cut than a wood block. Whereas a wood block allows for greater detail. In Escher’s words: “To me the moon is a symbol of apathy, the lack of wonderment, which is the lot of most people. Who feels a sense of wonder any more, when they see her hanging there in the heavens . . . Leonardo da Vinci wrote of the moon, ‘La Luna grave e densa, come sta, la Luna [The moon has weight and gravity.
