Seven Apples: abstract still life interior painting, red apples on green & gray

This is an original sill life interior painting of fruit (apples) with a geometric fractured composition. The artist made the painting one section at a time. When working on one section, the artist would block off the rest of the composition so the objects and background needed to be placed again. By building the composition this way, the background and table appear at different levels and the shapes don't quite align. These imperfections convey a sense of passing time. In each section, the tone of the light changes, and the shadows switch directions. The apples and geometric shapes were chosen as much for metaphorical value as for aesthetics. A seemingly simple arrangement in a familiar painting genre contains a depth of observation, artistic choices, and interpretation.
This painting is signed and dated on the back. Includes all hanging hardware and ready to install; no need for additional framing.

Bernard Harmon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1935. Harmon was primarily a portrait painter and a well loved teacher in the Philadelphia area. A graduate of the Philadelphia Museum School and Temples Tyler School of Art, Harmon traveled extensively in Europe and South America. Beloved by many, Harmon taught in the Philadelphia School District for 32 of his 54 years of life. Beginning his career as an art teacher at West Philadelphia High School, in the early 1960s he became one of the district's artists in residence, traveling from school to school to demonstrate for students how an artist works. Returning to the classroom, Harmon joined the art department at Central High School where he taught for 14 years and became an innovator in art curriculum, developing a program offering advanced placement art classes to gifted students. In his final years Harmon became a supervisor, mentoring teachers and overseeing programs in the Philadelphia school systems District #1. During his short life Harmon taught collage preparatory art classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, summer classes at the University of the Arts, and a Saturday program for gifted children at Drexel University. Among Harmon's portraits were commissioned by Philadelphia Jazz organist Jimmy Smith and Mayor Richardson Dilworth. Diane Lachman’s photographic pandemic project began in March 2020, when Covid 19 forced us to shelter at home. After a year of experimentation with the refraction of natural light through prisms, she created complex and vibrant images that reflect our experiences during these tumultuous times. By observing the change of the position and quality of light and shadow each day, she developed a new sense of the passage of time. Her photographs reflect the desolate days of this period as well as the bright days when we experienced hope. The dark, somber colors in "Heartbroken" convey Lachman's reaction to George Floyd’s death and the resulting world wide protests.
Lachman’s inventive abstract paintings and photographs emphasize the expressive power of color. Her work has been the subject of twelve solo shows. Most recently, an exhibition of her pandemic photography project: “Refracted World” was shown in July 2021 at Muse Gallery in Philadelphia. She participates in many juried and invitational group shows. Currently, Lachman is the acting director of Muse Gallery in Philadelphia where she has been a member since 2010. Her paintings are represented in numerous private and corporate collections, including Temple University School of Medicine, the Howard Gittis Student Center Art Collection at Temple, the Art Collection at Park Towne Place in Philadelphia, and the Lankenau Medical Center.
Lachman studied at Rhode Island School of Design and the Cleveland Institute of Art. She earned her BFA and MFA degrees at the University of Pennsylvania, where she taught drawing and color theory from 1993 to 2013. Her intuitive approach to her work complements her years of teaching Josef Albers’ “Interaction of Color.”

Albert Jean Adolphe was known as a decorator, a portrait painter, and a landscape artist. He worked in oil and watercolor. Born in Philadelphia in 1865, he attended the Pennsylvania Museum School of Art. After graduation, he traveled to Europe and studied under Jean Leon Gerome and James Whistler at the Ecole des Beaux Artes in Paris and under DeVriendt in Antwerp.
Adolphe was a member of the Graphic Sketch Club and the Philadelphia Art Club. In 1894, he was awarded a honorable mention at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago and in 1899 he received an honorable mention in Paris. From the Philadelphia Art Club he won the Stotesbury Prize. He did decorative work at the Marlborough-Blenheim Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
For many years, Adolphe showed in Chicago, St. Louis, and in Philadelphia. From 1898 to 1902, he exhibited at the Paris Salon and later in Antwerp and Munich.
