Hopper Drawing by and inscribed by Carter E Foster to Herbert Kasper, 1st Ed
Located in valatie, NY
Hopper Drawing by Carter E Foster. 2013, Whitney Museum of American Art. 1st Ed hardcover with dust jacket. This monograph was prepared to accompany the exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, from May 23 to October 6, 2013. The exhibition then traveled to Dallas and finally to the Walker Art Center in 2014. The book was owned by Herbert Kasper and inscribed by the author to him. Herbert Kasper was an American fashion designer known as Kasper. He studied English and advertising at New York University and fashion at the Parsons School of Design in New York from 1951–53 and l'Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in 1953. He left NYU to serve in the US Army in Europe. After World War II he enrolled at Parsons, where he became a protégé of milliner Fred Frederics. After graduating, he returned to Paris for two years developing his skills in design while working for Jacques Fath, Christian Dior, and Marcel Rochas. When he returned to the US, he worked for Frederics at Mr. John. He was an avid art collector, and in 2011, the Morgan Library and Museum devoted an exhibition, called “Mannerism and Modernism: The Kasper Collection of Drawings and Photographs,” to the designer. Hopper Drawing is the first major museum exhibition to focus on the drawings and creative process of Edward Hopper (1882–1967). More than anything else, Hopper's drawings reveal the continually evolving relationship between observation and invention in the artist's work, and his abiding interest in the spaces and motifs--the street, the movie theatre, the office, the bedroom, the road—that he would return to throughout his career as an artist. This exhibition showcases the Whitney's unparalleled collection of Hopper's work, which includes over 2,500 drawings bequeathed to the museum by his widow Josephine Hopper...

Gustav Wilhelm Palm, Watercolor of a Neapolitan Fisherman Playing his Lute
By Gustav Wilhelm Palm
Located in Stockholm, SE
A fine watercolor of a Neapolitan fisherman playing on his lute by Gustav Wilhelm Palm (1810-1890). Signed and dated 1842. On the bottom center written "Piscatore di Napoli". Gustaf Wilhelm Palm (1810-1890) was a Swedish landscape painter and art professor. At 18 years in 1828 of age he attended the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. His early paintings were landscapes in the Romantic style that showed the influence of Carl Johan Fahlcrantz. After a trip to Norway in 1833, with Count Michael Gustaf Anckarsvärd, he came under the influence of Johan Christian Dahl and began to depict nature more realistically. This change came to fruition in his book of lithographs from 1837. That same year, he went to Berlin for treatment of an unspecified eye disease. Rather than returning home, he travelled throughout Germany and spent two years in Vienna. Then continuing his trip and finally arriving in Rome in 1840. That winter, he went to Venice, filling sketchbooks that he took back to Rome when he arrived there again in the summer of 1841. Altogether, he spent eleven years in Italy, becoming part of a local community of Swedish artists that dominated the Swedish art scene until the ascension of the Düsseldorf School. His best work is usually the paintings and drawings he did "en plein air" during his stay in Italy. In 1851, he toured through Spain and Paris on his way back to Sweden. The following year, he was named a member of the Royal Academy. In 1856, he married Eva Sandberg, the daughter of Professor Johan Gustaf Sandberg. Their daughter, Anna Palm...

19th Century Unknown Antique Stockholm - Drawings

Watercolor by Gösta Adrian-Nilsson (1884-1965), "Gasmask" Signed and Dated
Located in Stockholm, SE
Water color by Gösta Adrian-Nilsson also called GAN. Signed and dated 1952. This watercolor called “Gasmask” was exhibited at Liljevalchs art exhibition in 1958, cat no 322. It belonged to the artist by 1958 and was later given to his close friend artist and silversmith Wiven Nilsson (1907-1974). Gösta Adrian-Nilsson usually referred to as GAN, was a Swedish artist and writer. He is regarded as a pioneer of the Swedish modernist art movement. GAN debuted as an artist 1907 with an exhibition at the Art Museum of the University of Lund. After studies at Zahrtmann's School in Copenhagen, he traveled year 1914 to Berlin to study modernism. Through the writer Herwarth Walden's gallery Der Sturm he came in contact with the contemporary art movements. Both Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc were of huge importance when he began developing a semi-abstract style with deep, vibrant colors, an own style of expressive cubism. He was fascinated by modern technology and masculine strength, which was reflected in his artistic works. Year 1916 he moved to Stockholm, where his modernistic art and propaganda for the new art caused much attention. Around year 1919 his art was developing into pure abstract art. Around year 1920 he made several collages in the dadaist style. Between the years 1920 and 1925 he lived in Paris and there he came in contact with Alexander Archipenko and Fernand Léger. Léger's influence can partly be seen in his rendering of mechanical human figures such as sportsmen, seamen and soldiers. GAN produced geometric abstract works around the end of 1920s. During the 1930s he developed his own personal relationship to surrealism and took part in exhibitions like Kubisme-Surrealisme in Copenhagen in the year 1935. His later works approached romanticism, inspired by the landscape painter Marcus Larson...
