Pair of Hunt (Assistant to Storr) Sterling Silver 1850 Covered Vegetable Dishes
By John Samuel Hunt
Located in New York, NY
John Samuel Hunt, English pair of sterling silver multi-lobed covered vegetable dishes from 1850 (Victorian era) adorned with curvilinear natural motifs. They measure 12'' by 12'' by 4 3/4'' in height, weigh 97 troy ounces, and bear hallmarks as shown. The exquisite design of these pieces is such that the so-called button at the top of the covered dishes is removable. This means that these covered dishes can easily become two bowls (four in total), each beautifully adorned with natural motifs, each measuring by 12'' by 11'' by 1 1/2'' in height. Hunt & Roskell, a firm of manufacturing and retail jewelers and silversmiths, was founded by Paul Storr in 1819, trading as Storr & Co. (1819-22), Storr & Mortimer (1822-38), Mortimer & Hunt (1838-43) and then Hunt & Roskell (1843-97). John Samuel Hunt, who had assisted Storr from the start, continued as a partner until his death in 1865, when he was succeeded by his son. Paul Storr (1770-1844) is considered the greatest English silversmith of the Regency era, and his beautifully ornate silver reflected the rapidly changing world in which he lived. Storr's reputation rests on his mastery of the grandiose neo-Classical style developed in the Regency period. He quickly became the most prominent silversmith of the nineteenth century, producing much of the silver purchased by King George III and King George IV. Much of Storr's success was due to the influence of Philip...

Pr. George III Gilt Carton-Pierre and Giltwood Oval Mirrors, Manner John Linnell
By John Linnell
Located in New York, NY
A fantastic and extremely rare pair of George III period gilt Carton-Pierre and giltwood oval mirrors in the manner of John Linnell. Each mirror is gorgeously hand carved with meticulous detail and fine craftsmanship. The giltwood borders are designed with foliate crests above female masks, with aprons centered by a standing or recumbent left facing lamb. It is extremely rare to find a pair of mirrors of this date and in such amazing untouched condition, the mirror panels are most probably original and date to the late 1700s. Provenance: Jeremy, Ltd., London England, circa 1770 Carton-pierre, literal translation from the French - cardboard stone, was developed in the 18th century specifically to imitate wood and stone. The Formula typically included flour, chalk, sawdust, sand and plaster and bound with wax, resin, animal glues or gum arabic. The material could be moulded, bent and otherwise formed into the desired design. Preeminent makers like Gillows and John Linnell began using carton pierre in the late 1760s. The new material allowed for lacey decorative spandrels and festoons that could be made into nearly any length or shape required. These elements and the particular foliate umbrella canopy on this pair of mirrors relates to designs of William and John Linnell. The most famous example of this crest element is on the mirror supplied by Linnell to the 4th Duke of Beaufort for the State Bedroom at Badminton House...

Venus
By James Abbott McNeill Whistler
Located in New York, NY
James Whistler (1834-1903), Venus, 1859. Etching and drypoint, printed in black ink on laid paper, an impression in the second (final) state: there was no published edition. 6 x 9 inches (15 x 22.6 cm) sheet 73/8 x 117/8 inches (18.8 x 30.3 cm) Reference: Kennedy 59; Glasgow 60 A very fine impression. A study of Héloïse, ‘Fumette’, asleep in bed, her head pressed into the pillow and the bedclothes covering her lower legs. This is one of three portraits Whistler made of Fumette in 1859: one of the others shows her standing and in the third only her head and shoulders are depicted. Venus is a work in the Realist tradition, and may be compared with Courbet’s nudes of the same period. The artist may also have had in mind Rembrandt’s study of Antiope in his etching Jupiter and Antiope. Venus was never published and there is no record of it being shown until 1898 when it was included in an Exhibition of Etchings, Drypoints and Lithographs by Whistler at H. Wunderlich & Co., New York. To have been overlooked for exhibition until so late in Whistler’s life might suggest that the subject was considered improper. Frederick Wedmore, whose catalogue of Whistler’s etchings...
