Signed Julian Schnabel 'Tableaux Tati Les Plus Bas Prix' catalog
By Julian Schnabel
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Signed Julian Schnabel 'Tableaux Tati Les Plus Bas Prix' catalog: Front cover is hand-signed (J.S.) and inscribed by Schnabel to the historic critic and downtown art scene fixture Edit Deak. Published on the occasion of Schnabel’s 1990 show at the Yvon Lambert Gallery, Paris - the paintings from this series, painted on “Vichy” fabric, inspired by the Parisian department store Tati, are reproduced along with an excerpt of a dialogue from the Wim Wenders movie Paris Texas. Medium: Offset printed exhibition catalog. Dimensions: 11 x 8.25 inches. Good overall vintage condition with the exception of some minor signs of handling and scattered finger prints on reverse cover. Hand signed (initialed J.S) and inscribed on front cover from an edition of unknown. About the artist: Julian Schnabel is a painter and filmmaker known as an integral member of the American Neo-Expressionists along with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Eric Fischl. Schnabel’s application of paint on massive canvases, use of unconventional materials such as broken plates, and representation of human figure(s) are hallmarks of his most famous works. “My paintings take up room, they make a stand. People will always react to that,” he said of his work. “Some people get inspired, others get offended. But, that's good. I like that.” Born on October 26, 1951 in Brooklyn, NY, Schnabel participated in the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in the late 1970s, after his public persona grew. The artist turned to feature-filmmaking in the 1990s with his film Basquiat (1996), an intimate fictionalized account of the life of his late friend. Schnabel went on to win the Grand Jury Prize for Before Night Falls (2000) at the Venice Film Festival and the Best Director Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for The Diving Bell...

Dennis Hopper Photographs 1961-1967 Limited Edition Hand Signed Monograph in box
By Dennis Hopper
Located in New York, NY
Dennis Hopper Photographs 1961 - 1967 (Limited Edition Hand Signed), 2009 Hardcover Book in Clamshell Box. Hand Signed and numbered 1327/1500 Hand signed by Dennis Hopper on the colophon page. 19 × 14 1/4 × 3 1/10 inches This is the limited edition (signed and numbered) collector's edition, not to be confused with the later mass market edition. Hand signed, hardcover book in a clamshell box from an edition of 1500. 17.3 x 13 inches (book) 19 x 14 1/4 inches (box) 546 pages Accompanied by Certificate of Guarantee issued by Alpha 137 Gallery During the 1960s, Dennis Hopper (1936–2010) carried a camera everywhere—on film sets and locations, at parties, in diners, bars and galleries, driving on freeways, and walking in political marches. He photographed movie idols, pop stars, writers, artists, girlfriends, and complete strangers. Along the way he captured some of the most intriguing moments of his generation with a keen and intuitive eye. From a selection of photographs compiled by Hopper and gallerist Tony Shafrazi—more than a third of them previously unpublished—this Collector’s Edition distills the essence of Hopper’s prodigious photographic career, documenting the likes of Tina Turner in the studio, Andy Warhol at his first West Coast show, Paul Newman on set, and Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. In many ways this work is photography as film, a poignant narrative expressed through a series of stark images—early shots of Tijuana bullfights, LA happenings, and urban street scenes show an experimental freedom that would translate into the vivid cinematic imagery of Easy Rider and beyond. The images are accompanied by introductory essays from Tony Shafrazi and legendary West Coast art pioneer Walter Hopps, as well as an extensive biography by journalist Jessica Hundley. With excerpts from Victor Bockris’s interviews of Hopper’s famous subjects, friends, and family, this is an unprecedented exploration of the life and mind of one of America’s most fascinating personalities. CONTRIBUTORS The photographer Dennis Hopper (1936–2010) was an acclaimed artist, actor, screenwriter, and director who first impressed audiences with his performances in Rebel Without A Cause (1955) and Giant (1956). He changed the face of American cinema with Easy Rider (1969), which he cowrote, directed, and starred in. Hopper went on to act in hundreds of memorable films and television shows, including Apocalypse Now (1979), Blue Velvet (1986), Hoosiers (1986), True Romance (1993), Basquiat (1997), Elegy (2008), and the TV series Crash (2008). Hopper began painting as a child and started taking photos in 1961, after his then wife Brooke Hayward...

Jean-Michel Basquiat Photograph by Nick Taylor of Gray: This rare Basquiat photograph was taken from Nicholas Taylor’s well-documented portfolio exploring his friendship with Jean-Michel Basquiat - a friendship which began when both collaborated on the historic New York No Wave band, “GRAY” in the late 1970s; before the two briefly lived together in the East Village. Selections from Taylor's portfolio were most notably exhibited as part of the Basquiat retrospective at London's Barbican in 2017 and have been featured in numerous noteworthy publications on Basquiat. "Basquiat knew funk, jazz and what was up. How many people were equally versed in Miles Davis and Funkadelic, Charlie Parker and Bootsy Collins, Thelonious Monk and the JBs?" (Glenn O'Brien, 'Gray Matters,' GQ, 2011) Archival Inkjet Print. 11 x 14 inches (including borders). Hand signed by Taylor on the reverse from a limited edition of 50. Excellent overall condition. Provided directly by artist. Listing dealer is a primary representative of Nicholas Taylor. Related exhibitions featuring this work: Basquiat: Boom for Real; Barbican London; September 2017-January 2018. Museum of the City of New York (NY, New Music: 1980-1986): 2021. Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Seeing Loud: Basquiat and Music): 2022. Nicholas Taylor (American, b. 1953) is a renowned photographer and musician. Taylor moved to New York in 1977 to pursue a career as a photographer and it was through the vibrant New York art scene that he came to know the young artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat. It was, in fact, his intimate portfolio of photographs documenting his friendship with Basquiat that rocketed Taylor to fame. The two would collaborate in the No Wave band “Gray” before Taylor launched a successful career as a DJ famous for track-looping (named "DJ High Priest" by Basquiat). His track “Suicide Mode” would later be used in the soundtrack for Julian Schnabel’s 1996 film “Basquiat." Exhibitions: Basquiat: Boom For Real at the Barbican Centre, London (9/21/17- Present) Literature/Catalog Raisonne: Basquiat: Boom For Real (Eleanor Nairne/Dieter Buchart) Jean-Michel Basquiat: King For A Decade (Taka Kawachi) Jean-Michel Basquiat: 1981, Studio of The Street (Diego Cortez) For further history on Basquiat & his group Gray, please see: "Gray Matters," by Glenn O'Brien (GQ magazine, 4/21/11) "We formed a band: Jean-Michel Basquiat and the New York noise underground," The New Statesman, 9/29/17 "Bowie, Bach and Bebop: How Music Powered Basquiat" (New York Times 9/22/17) Glenn O'Brien, "Gray Matters," GQ Magazine April, 2011: "Gray’s approach to music was having heard music, to approach instruments and sound systems the way one would pick up a strange machine and try to intuit its operation and function. Since Basquiat didn’t know guitar technique, it seemed like a good idea to play one with a steel file. Michael Holman discovered that you could achieve a very nice effect by pulling masking tape off the skin of a snare drum... And then there was the clarinet that Basquiat liked to walk around with, that was as much a scepter and wand as wind instrument. This utterly charming 27-track album is chock full of the road not taken, which sounds so right just now. It is refreshingly stripped of flagrant virtuosity but it is conceived brilliantly, played perfectly, and arranged impeccably... If a wine can have notes of chocolate, leather, licorice, and tobacco, then this record can have notes of William DeVaughn, Willie Hutch, Marcel Duchamp, Larry Coryell, the Modernaires, Sergio Mendez...

Keith Haring Into 84 (Keith Haring Tony Shafrazi announcement card)
By Keith Haring
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Keith Haring Painted Man: Original 1983 announcement card for Keith Haring’s well-documented exhibition, Keith Haring 'Into 84' at Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York, 1983. For this series Haring borrowed Jones' body — from head to toe — as the canvas to his work. A bodily canvas defined by much of the bold pictograms characteristic of Haring's artistic signature. Photos by Haring's long-time friend and collaborator Tseng Kwong Chi. Off-set printed, 1983. Dimensions: 6 x 4 inches. Some minor fading to the reverse; otherwise very good overall condition with strong colors. Literature: Keith Haring: Posters (Prestel pub.) Further About In 1983 Keith Haring teamed up with award-winning choreographer and dancer Bill T. Jones, founder of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. Keith and Bill met in London in 1983 at a time when the graffiti artist was opening a major show at the Robert Fraser Gallery, and together they produced a series of exceptional collaborations in both performance and drawing. Area Nightclub poster 1984 (Area nightclub New York)
By Fernando Natalici
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Area Nightclub 1984: A RARE original 1984 street poster for the seminal & much legendary 1980s New York nightclub Area, uniquely featuring an alien-like Ronald Reagan; a poster that was plastered throughout the streets of downtown Manhattan in the days leading up to Halloween 1984 (referenced in final listing image). This striking work is featured in the club's acclaimed book 'Area 1983-1987' and was exhibited at The Hole Gallery in New York as part of their noted Area exhibition. Well-preserved. Offset lithograph; 35 x 23 inches. Good overall vintage condition. Minor signs of handling and some scattered surface creasing. From an edition of unknown with few known to have survived. Provenance: Area designer Fernando Natalici. Area opened its doors in September 1983 and virtually overnight became the nexus of one of the most vibrant Downtown art and club scenes in New York. Every six weeks, they transformed the enormous space at 157 Hudson with a different art exhibit & performance theme. Area was the place where A-listers such as Andy Warhol, Francesco Clemente, Julian Schnabel, Madonna, JFK Jr. & many others went to see and be seen: A place where Basquiat DJ'd, while Keith Haring and Andy Warhol produced several installations. Area's wildly creative invitations became the hottest tickets in town and instantly collectible art in and of themselves. Literature/References: pg. 169, Area: 1983-1987 by Eric Goode Jennifer Goode (pub. by Abrams 2013). New York Magazine 2013: "It Was the Hottest Club in Town." New York Times November 2013: "Waking Area Nightclub From the Dead". Exhibitions: 'Area: The Exhibition': The Hole Gallery NYC November 2013. Area: Further History (New York Magazine 11/1/13): "Influenced equally by sixties-era happenings and the gonzo childhoods of its proprietors, Area opened its doors in 1983. The club, unlike any that came before it, underwent a painstaking transformation roughly every six weeks, with themes like Confinement, Suburbia, and Science Fiction that incorporated elaborate art installations with taxidermied bears, live monitor lizards, and enemas.
