Elegant, rare, and dating to the late Qing period (circa 1890s), this hand-carved nearly colorless white nephrite plaque has been etched on both sides. One one, the Chinese mythological figure known as Zhang Guo Lao is depicted riding a mule. On the opposite side, a magpie sits on a branch of cherry blossoms. The magpie is associated with intelligence. The carving is breathlessly simple and excellent; the work executed -of course- without the aid of electricity or modern tools.
Measuring 42.54mm x 29.92mm, the plaque has a hole drilled through the center, which is original to the piece. A silver bail is threaded through the hole and a pair of beads -black jade and coral- reside at the bottom. The jade plaque hands from a 1920s silver chain that is 32" in length.

About Freres Rochat:
Frères Rochat is a Swiss company that was founded in the early 19th century by Antoine and Samuel Rochat, two brothers who came from a long line of skilled watchmakers. Rare collectible in 14 carat gold by the House of Cartier
This thermal container by the Maison Cartier is made of 14 carat gold. The slender, cylindrical body is raised on a round foot rim, adorned with a fine, revolving floral frieze. The latter is repeated along the upper rim. The cover is crowned with a floral finial and there are small acanthus handles on the sides. The front is decorated with an entwined monogram in relief. Due to the insulation, the container may be used as an exquisite ice bucket.
Typically, pieces of this kind were made by Cartier as giveaways or Christmas presents. Usually made of silver, only rarely of gold, they were commonly merely signed and stamped with the fineness without further hallmarks.
The piece is hallmarked on the base with the fineness '14 KT' and signed 'Cartier.' It is in good condition with hardly any signs of use. The height measures 23 cm and the weight is approx. 900 grams.
