Autumn

Autumn was taken on Thimbleberry Farm (our farm) in October 2022. Autumn is an almost mystical photograph that is styled in the theme of James Turner, one of my main inspirations. I think that there are more than just the four main western seasons. Autumn, for example, has at least four phases or seasons – like the moon. The first is Early Autumn – when you live the last perfect summer afternoon. Then you have First Autumn -- defined by the first gold in the trees, & by those first nights where it feels so amazing to sleep with the A/C off, & you bring the big warm comforter comes out of storage, & you open the windows wide. Second or Middle Autumn is where you see your first frost of the season. So, you dig out the hats, gloves & jackets that you’ll be using for the next six black & white months. It’s when the trees are fighting, almost, for the brightest or darkest or richest or riotous colors. Third Autumn is the end of Autumn. It’s when the longer & longer nights, or the gray storms rip the leaves from the trees like an angry lover. It’s when the hard sunlight seems to glare, almost balefully right at you when you try to sit in your favorite chair.

I'm Thomas (@colorlabs_io), a photographer living on a 200 acre working farm in Northern Virginia. I try to stay grounded in the land. I photograph what I can see, what I can touch, & what I know. I work to capture ordinary, prosaic images, & attempt to make them extraordinary. The themes of my photographs are harmony and balance.
