Urban Dreams III

Urban Dreams III

The hoodie... cheap, functional streetwear, now a political totem, signifier of self, defiance, and unity. Fashion turned cultural icon and political dividing line. It is the central visual element in Urban Dreams, a virtual paean to the dignity, beauty and humanity of the wearers of those hoodies and the struggle it now represents.

Doris Rodriguez is an award winning interdisciplinary visual artist born in Santiago, Dominican Republic and based in Brooklyn, New York. Doris has exhibited nationally and internationally and has been an artist in residence at the Art Center / South Florida, the Art Hub in Abu Dabhi, and The Bakehouse Art Complex in Wynwood, Miami. "Everyday urban scenes and moments in life are the main subjects of my work. I am concerned with issues relating to the urban experience, personal and social intimacy, economical and social hierarchy, isolation, identity and how politics, culture and media affect our perception of ourselves and each other. Painting the subject out of their environment, elevating them from the reality in which they live in to another context, related to their relationship to the larger world. The narratives that flow through my work are drawn from my subjects, social and news media, and my personal life experiences. I seek to portray my subjects with dignity and with the beauty, humanity and power I see in them."
