A Kook Milieu Pop Up Shop at Barneys New York

Retail by Kelly Behun | STUDIO in New York, NY

A Kook Milieu was my first standalone pop-up shop at the Barneys New York Madison Avenue flagship store, and marked the debut of a wide-ranging new collection of furniture and home accessories. The collection is inspired partly by groundbreaking gallerist Holly Solomon, a key proponent of the Pattern & Decoration Movement in the 1970s and 80s, and partly by my affinity for experimenting with materials, patterns, and colors. Featuring items created by specialty artisans from around the world, the collection includes wood marquetry and lacquered fabrics from the Far East, woven textiles and etched suede from Italy, hand-cut stone mosaics from the Middle East, and hand-built furniture from Brooklyn. It also includes a curated mix of sculpture and ceramics by some of my favorite emerging artists. Together, the shop and collection represent the way I approach design, which is to have fun, take risks, and not be afraid to add a bit of ‘kook’ to your surroundings.
