Gracias Madre

Restaurant by Wendy Haworth Design Studio in West Hollywood, CA

We were very fortunate to have such a special space as a foundation for this incredible organic plant-based restaurant. Architecturally, the building is beautiful and raw: high barrel vaulted ceilings with wood trusses, brick walls and a generous outdoor space. We decided to preserve these original details as much as possible while creating a flow between interior and exterior. Our design choices were inspired and guided by the ethos of Gracias Madre: sustainability, community and reverence for Mother Earth. We decided to use Mexican design as a stepping off point and aimed to create a relaxed, bright and inviting space. Almost everything was custom made: the light fixtures, chairs, banquettes and tables. Custom steel doors and windows were added to brighten up the space and create a flow between the restaurant interior and patio. Reclaimed wood was used for both the floor and the custom tables and some of the glassware is made from reclaimed glass. Two highlights of the space are the graphic cement tiles on the bar face and restroom floors designed by artists in Oaxaca, which also influenced our black and white color scheme, and our vintage 1940s & 50s serapes we used as upholstery and the remnants on the aprons. Landscape designer Scott Shrader transformed the original parking lot into a lovely patio with Mexican brick herringbone, a pair of large olive trees and bamboo topped awnings.
