Harold English House

Family Home by Kay Kollar Design in Beverly Hills, CA

In 1947 Harwell Hamilton Harris built a house, considered by many to have been his best for Harold English, heir to the United Gypsum fortune. Fast forward to the present—the house was bought by my clients, art and architecture aficionados. The strong visual link between the inside and outside informed the palette I developed for the house and its furnishings. California colors—greens, browns, reds, orange, lavender and golds— provided the strong, suitable backdrop for the art of Morris Louis, Jules Olitski, Helen Frankenthaler, Kenneth Noland, David Hockney, Wallace Ting, Sam Francis, Anni Albers etc. V’Soske rugs with furniture designed by Robsjohn-Gibbings, Vladimir Kagan, Gio Ponto and myself created an assemblage intended to create harmony and comfort.
