Kips Bay 2013

Family Home by Dineen Architecture + Design PC in New York, NY

A sophisticated setting for cocktails and wine-tasting in an intimate glass observatory. Much as a good wine requires knowledge, taste, patience and care, the room embodies the worldly spirit of its user. The room is also about pleasure, humor and delight. The Celestial Evening is subtly invoked by the wall treatment and the art.

Upon entering, there is a warm, dark walnut-paneled room that is the working area: we have a leather-covered bar that incorporates a one-of-a-kind pair of art tiles, wine racks, and shelves for glasses and barware. The lenticular photo of a rock concert, by artist Margeaux Walter reminds us that there is a lot of living to do.

Turning left into the sitting area, we have two walls of windows while the third large wall is a palimpsest of an ancient celestial star chart with pictorial constellations. The furnishings are a family from many times and places: important Regency Mirrors and a Regency wine cooler are the Grande-Dames while their children of more modern times include a Leleu table, Ico Parisi side tables, a Lilii pendant.

The art completes the exploration: a yellow resin 2012 painting by Scott Patt explores consumer iconography, a 1978 Mario dal Fabbro sculpture folds space, a pair of 2007 Ori Gersht photographs explode space, and a 2012 Pamela Sunday Ceramic appears to come from the stars.
