Knightsbridge pied-a-terre

Apartment by Ashley Hicks Design Studio in London, GB

To the light, airy living room of this apartment, watched over by an old stone Ganesh, I added a corner banquette around my octagonal dining table, with cushions in a deep purple and turquoise, colours taken from the sari in the Claudio Bravo portrait, which I framed in vellum. In one corner was a high and awkwardly shaped window, which we covered with a TV cabinet in limed oak, the mirrored top framing a square niche backed with opal perspex, lit by daylight from the window. To the narrow, dark hallway I added a wall of mirror that doubles my new half-arch to make this a wide, vaulted space with an internal window at the end. We painted it a rich tobacco brown to emphasise the new architecture. For the master bed, I made an elegant half-tester as a frame for two beautiful Japanese screens painted with dancing butterflies, 'floating' against the curtain on hidden steel brackets.
